The "Not So Great" Coin Cities

In a recent post we had people share the cities and places that they felt were considered "good coin cities". It seemed that places like Dallas, Baltimore and Florida were considered the better places when it comes to numismatics.

I would love for everybody to share the places you feel are not better coin cities. Atlanta was already mentioned before. So where does everybody consider the cities that aren't good for coins?

Do you say Ohio because of the recent scandal or have you had personal experience?

    Even Seattle, Russ?

Aren't there a few larger coin companies based in the Seattle area? Isn't Pinnacle Rarities based in that area?

Ohio blows for coin shows, Period, which is why I drive to Baltimore at least 1x per year. Now with the sales tax here it's not going to get any better.

There's a coin show (or three) and a couple of coin shops. There's also a shop in next door Hobart
and in Schererville. Even Munster has one. Merrillville is the heart of coin country. image

I don't sense much love for the Pacific Northwest area such as Oregon and Washington. Is there a specific reason that those two states aren't good for being involved in coins?

If I remember correctly, there doesn't seem to be a lot of coin shows in Oregon and Washington.

Phoenix has had smaller and smaller shows for the past seven years. This year they had none!

Very few shows, about 4 decent ones for the region, and just not many Coin Shops in Oregon because of the lower population of the state. Some how I think the coins are in the region but when it comes to sell time they go elsewhere. Cheap prices from dealers or just not a demand for a certain series may dictate this. Another item I have noticed is that dealers do not stay on top of the market. The Gray Sheet seems to be king here.

If michael is referring to the Watts I think he is, then Watts wouldn't be a bad place for numismatics. Watts is in the L.A. area, and I believe that the L.A. area is one of the best numismatic areas in the country.

I can think of a few larger cities in the northern midwest and on the northeast corridor that are more dangerous than the Watts area is. I would rather walk through the Watts area at night than certain U.S. cities during the day, and that's not an exaggeration.

In AZ Phoenix is the pits, Tucson is 10 times better. The Pacific NW is OK, but for national shows, everyone outside of Portlan/Seattle/Spokane has to fly 1000 miles. New Orleans was prior to Katrina the #1 worst place for a coin show. I don't think it has imporved lately.

I guess there's just too much other stuff going on year-round here. But, it's only 100mi up to Long Beach.

It's only about 5mi from Beverly Hills all right---but light years away socially/economically. Can you spell GHETTO?

New Orleans may not have been a good place for a coin show, but nice coins turn up there frequently. New Orleans was one of my favorite places to go when I wanted to buy coins.
