Can't beiieve what some will pay for a $3 coin. It's interesting to see how much some people will pay to fill the hole.

Still, I can't blame the seller. They started this at 99 cents and were VERY clear that this was an added mint mark. This one is truly economic Darwinism. It's apparently worth several hundred bucks for some people to fill the hole knowing it's not authentic.

People used to add mintmarks to pass the coin off as real. Now it seems profitable to add a mintmark and sell it as a fake.

I have a feeling that since the fake is so good,it will end up back on eBay as a genuine piece. The buyer will most likely make a profit....

    My feeling, exactly!

Somebody, somewhere in the future is going to purchase this coin as genuine.

I really don't think that this coin is being purchsed to fill a hole.....

    But to fill someones wallet!

    Amazing.

At least the seller is honest, but we don't know about the buyer.

  • If you're going to pay that kind of money to fill a hole, then why not buy a fake that's in a higher grade than AG or G-4. I don't even think it's a real good fake, the "S" mintmark is positioned to low, and there is way to much detail on the mintmark, compared to the rest of the reverse. Given what the rest of the reverse looks like, I would think that the mintmark would be much flatter, and show much less detail. For the money being spent on this fake, think of the really nice "authentic" Barber (obviously not an 01-s) you could be spending your money on. Let's just hope it's being used as an expensive hole filler.

Not worth it to buy as hole-filler fake for $400 unless you plan opn reselling it as real at a later date.

No doubt in my mind where this coin is intended to go. Perhaps not the best fake around... but definitely good enough. In my area, there is an auction firm that has coin auctions once per month.... if this coin was placed in their auction, no doubt in my mind it would go as authentic.

Not much we can do about that. Let the buyer beware..... I have made my share of mistakes!!

  • Why would it be removed? He says it is fake.
  • Because eBay rules prohibits the selling of a counterfeit. Yess I know they let a lot of auctions continue even after we inform them that the coin is a fake, but in those cases they have to try and decide if it is or not and they aren't qualified to tell. So they error on the safe side (for them) and let the auction continue claiming that they can't tell if it is fake. In the case of this auction the seller has admitted it is a fake so eBay can go ight ahead and enforce their no counterfeit rule in safety.
