How can you tell a REAL 1943 COPPER lincoln? Auction over at $1310.99

Is there any way to tell a real copper 1943 lincoln other than using a magnet?

Some 1943 copper cents are created by taking 1948 cents and tooling the final digit of the date. Also, since the 1943 cents were made of steel, some counterfeiters have used them as hubs to create false dies to strike fakes using unstruck cent planchets. A coin such as this definately needs professional authentication.

  • What does a professional do to check the authenticity? Do you know of any professionals in the Rochester,NY area that can do this?

You should really send to ANACS, NGC or PCGS for the final word and guaranteed authenticity.

In Rochester, I would check with Ira Stein. He knows his Lincolns. He reads these boards from time to time and on Ebay is iras4.
  • How much would you pay on a coin that someone was selling raw without knowing if the coin was genuine? Just the persons word. I have a little over 50k but would have to pull strings to get it but can do it. Though may not have to go that high at all. 100% guarantee and return policy.

Some people collect fakes and pay well for some of the better executed fakes. I wouldn't pay serious money for this coin without first getting it slabbed by one of the top three TPGS.

I would pay one cent. No, I'm not kidding. Under the circumstances you mention, I believe the odds of it being real about about as good as winning the Powerball lottery.

Do you know the seller personally? Have you asked him why he hasn't submitted it for authentication?

Don't let greed and the dollar signs flashing in front of your eyes get the best of you.

One thing the authentication services have going is that they have seen hundreds of fakes.
You can't gain that type of knowledge any other way.

I could probably tell you if it's real but that would just be my opinion and my word.
That's not good enough for a coin of this value.

If the seller is giving you his word, he must know coins.
I would think he would also know that it must be sent in for authentication.

The problem is that when you find out it's a fake and email the seller about the return, you will never hear back from him.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

There are die-struck counterfiets of this coin.

    BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Genuine 1943 Copper Cents will show some zinc residue on the coin, because it was struck from dies that were striking zinc-coated steel planchets.

The zinc residue usually shows up near the raised areas of the coin near the field, but can also show up in the field.

I can't see any residue on the questioned coin.

    Hope this helps.

  • blastpak, this person has been scamming crap on ebay for a very long time, under different names, always private auctions, always supposedly rare coins, always from an estate... stay away, stay very far away...

looks like they ditched the "looks all good to me" that they used to put in their auctions. LMAO

Way back when I was a kid, lots of kids did things to coins like the modifing of 44's to 14's, 37's to 31's, 48's to 43's and changed lots of road speed limit signs by adding a 1 in front of what ever it said. I do have some really great looking copper plated 43's though.

    Scam point #11:

    11. The seller is a Doctor......ain't it always the case!

First time a real 1943 copper wheat cent has been found in a 2x2 and labeled as such. Duh?

You can't run fast enough from this auction. And look, 99.7% FB from the seller!

Geez, this person is giving SE coastal GA a bad stench. Perhaps I should drive up to Savannah with some insecticide.

Betcha five bucks that coin would stick to a magnet.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

  • There used to be a bunch of copper-plated steel pennies for auction. Some of them looked really nice, but it was still just a gimmick. If this coin was real, you could bet all of your assets that the current owner would have it slabbed.

<< This is a very nice coin and appears to be in good condition. >> (Emphasis added.)

    Yeah, right !
