NEW PURCHASE- 1/4 eagle experts- can I get your opinion....

I recently made a purchase from the fleabay jam session and am curious to know if I made a good purchase.

ebay item #8347593051

I know it is a common 1910 $2.50 eagle- a spot of 'gold'- and me being the Morgan freak that I am, saw something in this coin that tells me it is more than just a piece of gold. So I would like some very honest opinions as to what you may think it would grade, if sent off to the NCS folks for conservation- to me it looks like it needs it desperately. In your opinion did I pay to much for this little trinkett? or did I rob the poor fellow blind?

please I truly would like honest opinions. I may be venturing into a new arena if the opinions are favorable to this little guy.

Thank You

MH2

It looks that way now, but with a little conservation work from the 'experts' across the street- maybe just maybe a nice eagle?!?!?

How on earth can you expect us to grade a coin, a large part of the surface of which we can't even see (and have no idea how it will turn out)?

If you paid melt or less you have an ugly hunk of gold, if you paid more you should try and return it.

Maybe I'll just wait - get it in hand take my own dang pics- send it to NCS and wait til it comes back- then post the finished product.

sad part is- people saw this coin 2 months ago here on the boards.

Providing that the coin is authentic (buying raw gold off eBay is always risky), after conservation
it will still look cleaned . Much better to find a coin that hasn't been "messed with" and has been
    certified as genuine.

I'd be too concerned it was a base metal fake with some of the gold plating coming off to buy that coin.

It is quite possibly throwing bad money after bad, spending postage and conservation fees.

Tylenol isn't that old is it? Didn't Tylenol hit the market in the late 70's? image

I don't know Mark- but if this coin comes back as a 63, even from NGC- it will be worth the fee for the conservation/grading. I paid a whopping $133 for the coin so far- I'm not crying if it makes it to a xf/au even.
I think i might have made a good choice- who knows- as I said I'm not a goldie expert- but I did make a 85cc Morgie raw bought at 63 money into a 65 slabbed, maybe I have an eye maybe not- I shall find out soon enough.

I remember someone tellin me about 5 months ago to stay away from raw coins, and not to play the crackout game- I'm not 'experienced' enough to do this, and in all honesty- maybe I'm not- but this is how a few people managed to get into this thing called collecting- they SAW something, liked it and gave it a shot- and won.

I appreciate your opinions and concerns about buying raw coins- but ya got to start somewhere.

    Dude!

How could you all have missed the posts about this coin and the half eagle that was reportedly found with it?

Unless, of course, you're just kidding image

It was a board member that sold this coin. His thread can even be seen on the BST.

It is an ugly coin if you ask me. I dont think it is worth the chance. But you could always have it melted or slabbed at ANACS.

You paid double melt for that ugly thing? I doubt a dealer would give you $50 for it, IF it is genuine gold. You must not have seen the earlier thread on this coin.image

You asked for honest opinions, or I would have skipped commenting. Sorry.

I hope you get lucky and it 64'simage. Even if it does not clean up good you can still recoup most of your money and have a fun time hoping it gets holdered. I might have bid on it too if I saw it image. mike

Oh yeah- even if it's counterfiet you can sell it for close to what you paid for it.

I think you made a poor choice.....

The risk is high with the reward being low.....

Analyzing a risk:reward ratio, I agree the chances of success are low. That said, if you were just having fun and blew $133 that's okay. I have lost quite a bit more when I thought I was doing it for real. image

Tell us how it all comes out. Maybe we will learn something.

Guys gotta take a shot here and there !

    Been there done that !

Never know when when ya make a silk purse from a sows ear !

I thank you all for the replies- as said if it's junk it is a learning experience, if it is good- the the sows ear will remain in a plastic coffin and may just get sold for something funner- like a raw 93-s morgie that looks like a fake.

We shall see- I agree the pics from the owner are bad- but i have bad eyes.

I will shoot it when she gets here.

Received the little beaut last night- well in hand I would classify her as a AU and the 'gunk' that is on it can come off- this baby goes to the 'cleaners' over at NGC.

I'll post pics - after the wife leaves for her strool thry the stores to spend more of my money (and some of hers).

UGLY she is, but pretty she will be...

This will be a cool experiment. I'll be looking forward to the results.

It will be interesting to see if NCS can do anything with it. I was interested in the coin because I liked the story that comes with it. Please let us know what happens with it! I, for one, am patient. image
