Can useful information be derived by comparing NGC and PCGS populations for a given coin in a partic

Suppose there's a coin for which there are several hundred MS67's in PCGS holders, but only a few dozen MS67's in NGC holders. What might that mean?

Is it often a refection on the "tightness" of the services?

Does it sometimes indicate that the quality of one service's 67 is different from that of the other?

Is it ever something to worry about?

It really depends on the coin we're talking about... some times, certains coins just aren't sent to services, or are only sent to one service and not the other...

I remember earlier this year when the SMS Satin Finish coins first started being graded, I remember that PCGS graded 5 or 6 2005-P Lincolns as MS70RD, and NGC had only graded 1 or 2... but the PCGS coins were still bringing a lot more than the NGC coins, even though the NGC coin was scarcer... a lot of that has to do with market perception...

  • It can be useful information. Looking at the next grade up and down and then doing ratios is better than looking at a pop number in isolation. Also look at prices realized on the auction sites and you have done the homework to be an informed buyer or seller.
