1977/76 Lincoln

I got all excited when I saw the article in the latest Coin World about the 77/76 Lincoln until I read the article and found out it was a fake. I have about 20 rolls of 77 Bank Rolled Lincolns I have had since 77. I managed a restaurant back then and either had to put them in a night bank drop or buy them myself. Since they wouldn't fit in the night drop bag I bought them. I guess they will just continue to take up space.

You can get around a buck a roll for them - no need for them to take up space.

There was a very interesting article about this in COINage years ago. Even the Mint was fooled for awhile and had declared it genuine.

Yes I remember that when it was "discovered". I spent a frantic week searching rolls from the bank trying to find one before it was debunked as a fake.

Was this the same mint that declaired the 1969 S DDO Linclon cent was fake or was that the Secret Service? Both have a less than stellar reputation for authentcating US collector coins.

Yep, same mint. Also the same mint that declared the 1944 no mintmark nickels to be genuine, and the same one that tried to see if the S mintmark on an AU 1893-S dollar was added by trying to pry it off using the point of a knife. After making several attempts to dig under it and pop it off they finally decided it was genuine. Of course now it has several gouges, scrapes, and tool marks around the mintmark.

Another interesting thing about the 1977 Lincolns was that in 77 someone tried to say there were two varieties of the 77 cent. On one of the varieties the tail on the 2nd 7 was longer than on the first 7. It was more pointed on the end making it longer. Does anyone else remember this? There was an article in one of the coin magazines about the two varieties.

If memory serves me correctly it was either Coins Magazine or Coinage Magazine.
