I do not see a listing for this 74S- it is a nice bold example. Has anyone seen this die before?

I think I remember reading that the S mintmark punch used in 1974 was defective, making it look repunched. I took a quick look through a couple of books but couldn't find the reference, maybe one of the other copper guys can find it.

That is an RPM. I have never seen evidence to the effect that the punch was damaged in 1974. CONECA says it was, but there's no evidence to support their claim. I believe this excuse is used when there are a lot of similar RPMs in any given year that they don't want to mess with. The CONECA attributor told me personally that he disagrees with my listing the 1974S RPMs for this reason, but I disagree with his assessment that all the 1974S RPMs, both proof and business strike, were caused by a damaged punch. Damaged punches don't cause split serifs...period. 1972D is another good example of a supposed "damaged" punch that has split serifs and differing degrees of doubling.

    pretty hard to tell.

what if the original punch tool was defective. should it not look like that? a missing high piece...

    interesting find and discussion.

    thanks

Congrats John, as you say, a nice bold rpm. I would love to see you submit it to James Wiles for the first CONECA listing. But like Chuck says, be prepared for excuses for why it doesn't cut the mustard with CONECA.

Thanks for the replies guys. This is a nice uncirculated MDS strike that is bold in hand. Thanks again.
