I'm getting out of the hobby...
...the paper collectibles hobby that is!
I've collected vintage sportscards and vintage comic books off and on for years, and enjoyed it, but I've been doing the coin thing for almost a year now and have decided to concentrate on my coin collection exclusively. These little round silver (and copper & gold) treasures are just too
.
Anyone else have other hobby interests that have been put aside to concentrate on your coin collections?

...There's always time for coin collecting.

It goes back and forth... I play Magic: The Gathering, and I go in cycles where I put money into Magic, building decks, and going to tournaments, that sort of thing, and then I eventually go back to putting money into coins...

Ahh I used to play Magic too. Started right after Apocalypse came out, and quit a little after Champions of Kamigawa. Hah I was at Wal-Mart today, and I saw they were selling fat packs!!! How come they didn't sell those when I was playing?!?!

Don, I just checked out your buffalo collection. Very nice coins!
In all seriousness I also collect civil war photos and antique cameras. But I don't think I've added anything to those collections in nearly two years. In fact, I've even sold a few photos to feed the coin addiction.
<< <i>Yeah, I put my other hobby on hold..... I don't pay my mortgage nearly as often as I use to.

Bustman, I've collected Civil War photos also. I've had some nice Confederate and Union tintypes and ambrotypes, cased 1/6th plates. I had one that was ID'd to a Confederate Corporal and I did quite a bit of research on him. The bulk of them I've sold over the years to acquire other things... Like coins!

Thanks John, as far as the Benson collection
From Heritage's archives:
<< <i>Jerry S. Benson, Jr. is a very interesting collector, and a most atypical one at that. His background isn't with collecting at all, but rather with the high-tech world of computers. His role as a computer pioneer was demonstrated at such leading firms as NEC Technologies, Wyse Technologies, Amdek Corporation, & Ericsson. Among his many accomplishments, he founded the VESA Standards Association, which is responsible for much of the success of modern computer graphics. Benson is currently President & CEO of VTEL in Austin, Texas, a cutting-edge videoconferencing technologies firm, and the world's leader in digital visual communications. So how does a computer expert get involved with rare coins?
Benson's interest in coins was triggered while he was considering a purchase of bullion as an investment strategy. After immersing himself in coin investment literature, Benson discovered rare coins, and was hooked immediately. Reflecting the same approach he followed in his professional career, Benson jumped in feet first, pursuing literature and knowledge as the foundation for his strategy of acquiring the finest known coin in each area. Benson goal of collecting only the best was further refined to pursuing superlative coins from the first century of Mint production, focusing on early copper and large size silver, as well as early and proof gold. Nearly every piece carries pedigrees from the most celebrated numismatic cabinets. Benson's pursuit of these historic gems helped him escape the constant stress of the ever-changing world of high-tech. >>

I have almost all Union tin types. Some are in really cool cases. I had a gorgeous hand tinted 1/2 plate that I sold, and still regret selling. The confederate ones are real hard to come by and very expensive ( although not compared to coins). I'd love to see the one you did research on if you could pm me a pic of the corporal.
gets hauled out of the water in a week signaling the end of my sailing season and the beginning of my coin season. A double-edged sword if ever there was one.
Cheers,
Bob
I played Magic for a long time as well, Revised Edition till Exodus or so..... played this in high school and college and stopped when I graduated and the people I played cards with aren't around anymore..... I still have my decks all set up too.....
Started playing coins because I liked the history around them and the state quarters drew my interest. I also can justify paying more money for a gold coin then I could a mark mcqwire rookie card.....
I do go in hot and cold spells with coins however, have not purchased anything in a 2+ months, but will likely chance that tomarrow.....
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Knew I liked you for a reason. Any Pre-Code horror you'd like to maybe trade for some purty commems?
At least coins take up very little room in the condo, especially when the goal is to fill up albums.
