IMPORTANT: Heritage Relocates Palm Beach Auction to Dallas

Here is the full press release:

Heritage Relocates Palm Beach Auction to Dallas!
Reserved Seating Offered to Floor Bidders

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (HG&A) has announced that its upcoming Numismatic Signature Auction, originally scheduled for November 2-5, 2005 as part of the Palm Beach Coin Show, has been relocated to Dallas, Texas for the same dates and times.

"Due to the effects of Hurricane Wilma and the subsequent cancellation of the Palm Beach Coin Show, we have decided to relocate our auction to our corporate headquarters in Dallas," said Greg Rohan, President of HG&A. "I'd like to stress that only the physical location of the auction has been affected; the session dates and times remain unchanged, except that we are now starting the floor sessions based on Central Time instead of Eastern Standard Time, which means each floor session will actually start one hour later than originally planned."

"We've been monitoring this situation closely," said Rohan, "and felt we had to make a decision quickly, due to the necessity of transporting supplies and personnel to the show, as well as our need to schedule delivery of our many consignments via Armored Transport. Yesterday we thought the situation looked good for a Palm Beach auction and the coin show, as the Convention Center, City Place and nearby hotels all had full power restored. The Marriott across the street, where many of our clients would be staying, had anticipated that their phones would be up and running by yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, as of right now they still have no incoming phone service, and Bell South has been unable to provide a guarantee as to when that service will be restored. In fact, we have learned that the Marriott is full, and that several other nearby official host hotels of the show are closed with no estimation of when they will re-open. Additionally, officials in Palm Beach have been unable to provide a solid timeline as to when services in that area will be fully restored or when the current 9pm curfew would be lifted. Coin show officials have also been told that security personnel may not be available due to increased demands for law enforcement presence in Palm Beach county and elsewhere in the affected area. Therefore we felt that relocation to Dallas was the only decision we could make given the information available at this time.”

"I know that our decision will have a major impact on people's travel plans," added Rohan, "and we're working with airlines and local hotels to keep everyone's inconvenience to a minimum. We have included a list of hotels with contact information at the bottom of this release. Fortunately, we're told that there are plenty of hotel rooms and ample flight availability to Dallas next week so getting here should be relatively easy. The major airlines also have special policies in force where you can exchange tickets for flights prior to November 15 to and from West Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale for tickets to and from other cities, usually for no extra charge. Of course, none of this impacts those bidders who were planning on participating via our phone or Internet platforms."

“We are pleased to announce,” Rohan added, “that NGC has agreed to come to Dallas and grade coins during this event. Although we’re disappointed by this turn of events, we hope that our clients and friends will join us in Texas for what is sure to be an exciting auction.”

What about Heritage's announcement that in concession to consignors who will likely be financially hurt by this change of venue, it will give consignors 100% of hammer price rather than the standard 95%?

Anyone heard that one yet or want to start the rumor?

I was under the impression that just about everyone who is anyone already gets 100%. How about 105%?

Side note--it would be interesting to know what percentage of sellers, coins, and hammer get 100% or more of the hammer price.

In case this helps prepare someone else, here is an abbreviated version of my real life experience from today, for my change of flights.

My airline, Continental, told me, that because my new destination is more than 300 miles away from Palm Beach, I had to re-book based on a new fare basis, which is no longer a (lower priced) 14 day advance purchase. They did waive the $100 penalty for the change in flights.

Unless you are luckier than I was, however, don't expect to be able to change your flights and not cough up some extra $.

After three phone conversations (two of them with nice women and one with a not-so-nice one), I ended up having to pay "only" $90 extra to Continental, BUT arriving in Austin and then having to purchase a round trip fare (for $200 plus) with another airline to get to Dallas.image

Edited to dd: To those of you whom have asked me to view auction lots, I will still be doing so.

I would suspect that the change in venue would have more of negative impact on the Signature Sale lots than the heavy hitter lots in the
    Morse Sale.

    I certainly hope so. image
  • Coinguy1, Did you try Southwest Airlines to Dallas from Austin? Or is that Southwest. They are usually cheaper inside Texas. Southwest lands at Love Field and would be closer to Heritage than DFW.

All I know is I get 100% and was made fun of by TDN because of it. And I thought I was doing ok!

As I recall, it was a comment you made - not the fact you got hammer.
  • TDN...I am asking this question of you with all seriousness. At this point I don't know.

When I consign a coin with Superior I am charged a 0% seller's fee. The final price shown before the 15% buyers fee is added is what I receive. Is 0% seller's fee the same as getting the hammer?

CCGold, yes, it's Southwest that I'm flying, and to Love Field - I just couldn't get as good of a fare as usual, due to the late booking date. Thanks for thinking of me.

    << <i>Is 0% seller's fee the same as getting the hammer? >>

    Yes, Jerry.
  • Thanks Mark. And thanks for your help last time when this came up.

I would rather have the auction held at a later date in Dallas than travel to West Palm Beach, a natural disaster area, early next week. Spotty telephone service, sporadic power outages, preoccupied dealers, and a 9pm curfew don't sound like a portrait of fun for me.
