Guess the Grade on this 1886 Morgan Dollar--Grade Revealed!

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,776 ✭✭✭✭✭
I must say, even though it's white, I like this one... great lustre and strike. There are a few light marks on the cheek (including two small "craters," which look to be planchet flaws). Since the marks on the cheek were a little bit muted in the picture, I've given a blow-up of the cheek, and am also providing unresized images for you micrograders image

...Initially I wana say 65, depending on how deep those "craters" are.

Thats one heck of 64 if its graded at that though...

Ill go 65 for the clean fields too

Ill go against the grain and say that the cheek makes it a 63...though I know next to nothing.

I'll say 65 since it's a common date and will get a lot of leeway. If it had an 'O' mint mark I'd guess they knock it down to 63.

I'd say 65, but you know Jeremy, that might have an outside chance at a 66. Appears to have very pretty lusterimage

Just remember that the large picture of the cheek is a huge blow-up of the coin... the marks are there, but they're light. Crater probably wasn't the right word...

In that case, 66, maybe? But I still say they use it as an excuse to give it a 63 if it had an 'O' mint mark. image

65 unless it came thru on a "bad-mood" Monday, in which case 64 image

I've never seen an O-mint morgan with a strike like this down at 63 unless it was gashed image No excuses image

True. That would be a ridiculous O-mint strike. I guess they'd look for the faintest, most infinitesimal cabinet friction and call it 58, then. image

Yes, the coin's white... I know, I know... but it was a nice coin and the price was right. That said, I personally think you guys are murdering it image The coin is holdered in a super-old ACG slab as MS65.5... yes, 65 and a half. The coin is a no-brainer 65, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a 66 holder. There's a decent chance I'll send it in to NGC or PCGS and see what they have to say.

Accugrade in Des Moines? ...When did that happen?

Airplanenut-- I disagree, you have what is known as a "what if" coin-- "What if" there was no distracting line behind the eye and the 2 ticks- all on the key focal point of the coin; would it be a lock 66, shot 67, maybe even 68??
When grading Morgans the the cheek is almost the be-all end-all of the grade, all other things being acceptable. This one is a magnificent looker that unfortunately almost appears as though someone exposed the cheek to the bar and pointed ends of a paper staple at some point. The 3 marks are in the only place the grade would be dramatically lowered to 64, although on luster it has a shot at 65 at NGC even with the noticable distraction. This shows you can collect gorgeous coins that are twice the eye appeal of 4 and 5 figure priced drab and boring superb gems. image

<< <i>Accugrade in Des Moines? ...When did that happen? >>

A long, long, long time ago... before they were the ACG we know and... can't say love here...

Morgannut2... I'll respectfully disagree with you. I've seen a lot of 65s, and a lot of 66s. I've seen both grades with worse cheeks than this, especially on 65s. There is no doubt in my mind that this coin is a solid, high-end 65. When I get the chance, I'll show it in-hand to some people.
