Question about toning and Proofs

Does toning affect the grade of a coin. I have a PR70DC gold price that has some toning on the back of the reverse, does that make it not a PR70DC anymore? I know that this might sound like a stupid question but I just wanted to know.

Thanks
Dave

Technically, toning should not affect the grade of a coin.

It depends on the toning. Eye appeal is part of the grade and if the toning is ugly it would negatively impact eye appeal so, yes it can affect the grade. It also depends on the nature of the "toning". A lot of dealers and sellers, (in particular Teletrade), call haze "toning". It isn't. It's ugly gluck.

  • Well it a gold coin so the tone is a gold tone, so it blends right in with the coin. It is in the field of the coin a little, but it isn't a black or some other horrible color like that.
