Why would anyone have had this coin certified / graded? Even if it is one in 400,000.

    But, But, But, no one would buy it if it were not graded!image
    Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    1) They needed one coin to reach the minimum quantity for a submission;

    2) They thought it would have value with a grade of Poor-01;

    3) Poor advice and/or poor judgement.

    If that were the case they should have sent it to NNCimage

    would someone have something like that graded for the fact of it being slabbed to protect it at this point?

    It gives the graders something other then nice bright shiny coins to grade and besides it keeps their skills up with the lower grades. image

    Maybe they thought it was a C-1. An 1808 C-1 in that condition would still be worth several thousand dollars.

    Half cents die varieties are collected by Cohen numbers or C numbers. There are three die vaieties in 1808 C-1 and C-2 are 1808/7 but with two different reverse dies. C-1 is one of the rarest of all of the half cent varieties with around 9 to 12 known specimens. Unfortunately the coin in the ANACS holder is a C-3 which is common.

    Some coins are slabbed so that the slab will protect the coin image

    How much of a premium does having rotated dies add to the value of the coin?
  • Options
    Because some people just HAVE to have their coins certified.
