<< <i>Very nice!!! How did they do that to the reverse? -Dan >>
You start by using a lathe to shave down the center area inside the denticals until it is smooth and flat. Then you use enraving tools to hand create the engraved image. Then you apply ink to the entire reverse and then a clean "blotter pad to remove the ink from the flat non-engraved areas leaving the ink down in the engraved lines. This ink is then allowed to dry giving you the result you see in the auction.
I've seen pictures like this on shotguns, complete hunting scenes done that look like this, using lasers. Also portraits that look similar, I wonder if this is machine done. If so it takes about 2 minutes. I believe they call it acid etched...
I don't think so. I think you are seeing hand engraving of the type similar to what is done to create the portraits on our currency. Take a note from your pocket and put a glass on it and you will see the same type of fine lines that are sed in the engraving on this coin. (It's too bad the seller didn't provide better larger photos. I think I'll send him a request for larger images of the back of the coin.)
it,s a very interesting coin and if hand engraved it,s is called banknote and bulino engraving, which is lines and dots which involves tens of thousands of lines and dots..if it is an old engraving, it was done by a master engraver...while i,ve been engraving coins over ten years and have been to engraving school i would have to view coin under microscope to determine if it was machine done, laser, etched or hand engraved and if old or new...
$2247.88! Congratulations to the high bidder and seller if either of you are here. Jeff Oxman dropped out at $1275. He felt he needed to buy it, but commented that he thought it was getting expensive at $600-$800.

It's carved on the reverse of an 1853 With Arrows Seated Quarter.

Anyone know where the eagle symbol at the bottom comes from?
Also, based on the picture, there is a slight possibility that it was inked rather than burnished.

Sons of the American Revolution, it's a common symbol on memorial tokens from this period.
