I wonder who'll buy this PCGS (Mercury Dime) cert# for their Registry Set

Here's a 1945-P Mercury Dime PCGS MS63FB up for sale at the Heritage Palm Beach auction.

Unfrotunately, save for a few very nice examples that do exist, most others look just like this one. You need to use your imagination to see the FB on this one.

On the other hand, I've personally tried to make about 8 45-P's, all of which had FB and none made it! Not from a cross, not from raw -- none!

What a shame, or should I say how ironic, that PCGS allows coins that don't have FB to stay in their FB plastic, but won't let new coins in to PCGS plastic that actually have FB image

.....and here's another one: 1944-D Mercury Dime PCGS MS68FB image

....looks to be about a $50 coin in a $750 holder.

....these examples are the very reason why people think that they can't grade....they look at stuff like this out there, they buy stuff like this and they don't get anywhere near these kinds of grades when they submit.....

NOTE: These are both 5XXXX series holders. Most of the coins in this series' range should be "retired" from their current holders and put in to new/accurately graded holders.

For example -- the 45-P would be MS63 (no bands)...the 44-D would be MS66 (no bands).

Man, I just sold a 45-D PCGS 63 FB for a lot less than this. If someone pays that much for that coin I would have to question their sanity and ask just what kind of drugs are they on.image

Big difference in the pops of FB 45-D and 45-P. That's why the high price.

That being said, this coin does not deserve to be in FB plastic, IMHO...Mike

I suspect that the picture is not a good one. Iin person inspection is needed to verify that such 1945-P is full band.

I would hate to lose out on a coin just because the picture "threw me off."

Ugly coins for the grade....keeping in mind how easy the 44-D is with FB, someone was very pleased when they saw that grading report.

The 45-P is also no where near FB. Yes nice bands, but FB no way.

This coin is like the 53-S FBL Franklins. Close but not really full.

Robert, you have a valid point but because Heritage is prominent player and not some speculative seller, in this instance, I don't think your observation/comment is applicable. First of all, they had NO PROBLEM capturing the FB on the 65, nor did they have any problems on other coins. The only problems they have in capturing FB is when the coin is not.

Anyway, the only attraction to the 45-P is the FB. I assure you they're aware of it, and wouldn't have made a photography faux pax on the 45-P.
