If the VAM gurus asked your opinion for revamping the Top 100. . .

which coin(s) would you drop & add and why?

Most of you know I collect the 1878-S VAMs along with the Top 100/Hot 50. There are a few in the 1878-S series that are quite tough and worthy of consideration. The VAM 22 should be moved from the Hot 50 to the Top 100. I think it's in a different class than the VAM 6, which seems readily available, often in high grades where the VAM 22 is seldom seen and often found in low grades. The VAM 22 has dramatic, see-it-with-the-naked-eye doubling on the obverse and the reverse has some unique features also.

I say drop the 1887 VAM 12 alligator eye. That variety is found quite frequently, often in high grades and generally carries no premium.

I have other 1878-S suggestions but I won't bore you with them all at one time. image

What are you're thoughts?

Personally, I do not think the Top 100 needs to be revamped. If we start adding and dropping coins, then it is no longer the top 100. Since we already have a top 100 and a hot 50, why not create an additional group of newly discovered rarities to supplement those? Maybe call it something like the "Spicy 75", or the "Twinkling 25" or something like that.

There was discussion about dropping the micro Os from the list, but I think they should remain.

JD: My favorite VAM's are the really obvious ones with 50% of the coin being different from the regular issue -- i.e. the 1878 (Rev '79); 1879-S (Rev '78), and the 1880-CC 80/79 (Rev '78).

My next favorite varieties are the obvious overdates -- i.e. all of the 1880-CC's (8/ Hi 7), (8/ Lo 7), (80/79), etc.

I am not very interested in the minor varieties, other than to find a valuable one and to flip it to a VAM collector!!

The VAM-22 is a terrific coin, but the shared reverse with common vam-6 hurts it. PCGS has lumped together 1878-S 6/22 in one Registry
Set entry, along with 1882-O/S and EDS coins and 1879-O VAM-4/28. Kind of the way the Top 100 and Hot 50 work. Shared obverses
and reverses get one entry. As such, the super rare special vams get the same set "weight" as the common ones.

I already sent them an email saying they were making it too easy!

As far as alligator eye, that's a "gateway" type coin. It's included so people can find them and get hooked to keep going. There
are several "gateway" coins in the Top 100/Hot 50.
