$2-1/2 Indian, 1911-D weak D.

I'm going to submit some Quarter Eagles and wondered how PCGS differentiates between the 1911-D and weak D. I'm assuming that it will be noted in some fashion on the insert since the PCGS pop report makes the distinction, is that true?? Also, the PCGS price guide lists the two types but the GreySheet lumps everything together as just 1911-D with no mention of the weak D, so I'm wondering whether buyers are aware of the difference and price accordingly?

BTW, the coin should grade AU. Thanks for your help.

    Al,

I have no experience with the 11-D "Weak D" QE, but I do know that for the analagous 1850-C. 50-D, 54-C, and 54-D weak mintmark designations, the coins generally sell for a significant discount when compared to counterparts with a strong MM. As a branch mint gold collector, I personally avoid weak MM coins, and I suspect others feel the same.

You might consider searching Heritage auction archives for examples to prove or disprove my point.

I have a PCGS Weak D quarter eagle -- it's denoted on the holder just like any other desgination. I was lucky in that I bought mine raw as a 1911, and only later saw the weak D on the reverse! Interestingly enough, this was actually the first Indian Quarter Eagle I bought on my way to completing the set. By the time I was done, the "Strong D" coin was so expensive, I decided to just keep the Weak D coin.

These do sell for quite a discount -- check the Heritage archives and you'll see only a handful of these have sold through there, but at levels of ... oh, probably 40-50% of the Strong D coin. Every now and then you see them for sale on E-Bay, where they seem to sell for much stronger prices -- I saw one once that sold as much as a Strong D coin would! So I guess if you were ever to sell it, that would probably be the best venue.
