should I tell on a fraudulent eBayer

Hello,

You may recall that back in July I tried to buy a "cheap" High Relief Saint "off-eBay" that turned out to be an Omega. I heard from the seller a week ago saying he'd try to pay me back. I took a look at his eBay moniker and saw that he was still actively buying coins-though he said he couldn't refund the $5250 he owes me.

I received an empty, insured/registered pack from him on 19 August. I was then admitted into the hospital for six weeks. When I got out, I reported the case to the regional postal inspector. The case is still pending. My bank would not refund the money. I've also tried to report the problem with the credit union where his account is/was located.

Should I disclose his eBay ID and name/address (he's used two ID's and two addresses)? Perhaps there are people here who have dealt with him.

I don't want to do anything "slanderous" or illegal. I just want my money back. I've already struck out enough already. At least Mark Feld came through with buying my "piggy" NGC 60 High Relief Saint. I appreciate it, Mark.

I will also be happy to share recent email correspondence with the gentleman.

Thanks again, everyone.

Barney

I agree. Share with use who you are dealing with so we can analyze the situation. Would also be good so we can stay away from sellers like this.
  • Should you tell on a fraudulent eBayer or should you report a fraudulent eBayer? Do both.

slan·der Audio pronunciation of "slander" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (slndr)
    n.

    1. Law. Oral communication of false statements injurious to a person's reputation.
    2. A false and malicious statement or report about someone.

Telling the truth about someone is not slander, but only applies to oral communications. Libel is the same thing in writing, and the same applies. Truth is an absolute defense.

Wait just a second. How were you able to determine it was an Omega if you received an empty package?

I must say that at face value, unless I totally missed something, these two statements are just slightly conflicting. Again, just how are you able to state and or ascertain that the coin is definitely an Omega if you received an empty box? image

Help me out here, alright? image
  • Name: Israel Tsatskis (name on eBay auction: Israel Cooper) see eBay auction #8321791371
    eBay nick: poompoom666
    date purchased: 27 July 2005
showed eBay pic to PCGS board...suspected Omega by a few members
Date told that it was an Omega by seller: late September/early October 2005 (he said he showed it to ANACS...)
date "empty" package received: 8/19/05 ( I was in the hospital from 19 Aug- 28 Sept for treatment of bipolar disorder)
amount paid: $5000-seller cancelled sale after we made a deal "off-eBay"

    actions taken:

    * reported empty envelope to Postal Inspector, though the seller said he "forgot to put the coin in the envelope..." sure...
    * trying to contact credit union to where money was sent in July
    * Last email message from seller: Friday, October 7th...has not responded to the two emails sent by me during the past week...

I also lost $5K back in May 2005 on a wire-fraud scheme involving a never-received 1909-D PCGS 64 $20 eBay # 3974240760. I answered a "second chance" offer and paid for the mistake...I have reported this to the FBI and will send the documents to the Postal inspector as well. I was also ripped off by a "friend" to whom I loaned $20K in 2003/2004. He just went bankrupt after I came after him with a lawsuit (our agreement was in writing).

I am bipolar, a compulsive gambler and a fool with money. I gave up the slots and the tickets and the dogs for risky coin purchases and bad loans. I just transferred one behavior for another. Now I am trying to start over again. I have survived this stuff before and will again.

If this helps anyone, it will be a consolation.

    Thanks,

Wow. I feel your pain. That's really hard luck. I believe I'd go after both pf them if I were in your shoes.

As for the bankrupt friend, assuming you are alive in 10 years, you can continue to place and renew a

lien against him and, depending on what State you're in, should he inherit a substantial amout or

experience some type of windfall profit, you can get the money he owes you, with interest.
  • I'd be 54 in ten years...thanks for the info-and the compassion.

Man o man, what a story.

Suggest you read up on the e-bay scammer threads in this forum.

They do a good job of outlining all the various types of fruadulent e-bay sales techniques. They are basically the same. The two scams you describe are frequently exposed here.

The bottom line advice: 1) Always pay for anything e-bay, through e-bay payment methods with a CREDIT CARD, 2) make sure you follow all the detailed rules (don't go off e-bay with someone you don't know for a first sale or even subsequent sales of large $$$ amounts), 3) be very careful about second chance offers, many are fradulent (if you do get them, contact the selller through e-bay's server...not the e-mail you get, and verifiy the second chance offer)..... 4) and always remember a deal that too god to be true, is normally a bad deal.

    Good luck to you!!!

    Barney,

If this were the first time this type of thing had ever happened to you I'd be a lot more sympathetic. But, it isn't. It's a continually repeating pattern. Stay ON your meds, and stay AWAY from coins.

    I think it's both.

By the way, Barney, my check that you will be receiving, will be "off" by $200 from the price we agreed on. But the $200 difference should be one that you will be pleased with.image
