*Help* Liberty Walking Half Dollars

Is there actually varieties of the walking liberty (vams) and if so where can I find some info on them ?

VAM numbers are specific to Morgan and Peace dollars, just as Overton numbers are specific to pre-Reeded Edge halves. There are many other examples of variety identification systems, too. You may find some information in Breen, but I don't know of a specialized book for WLHs.

There are definitely well-known mint mark variations, however, no real premium in cost/value for these to my knowledge - perhaps in the very high-end grades, I am not sure. But just because their isn't a premium, doesn't mean the varieties aren't really cool! I'll see if I can dig up some pics of some of my varieties.

Pick up a copy of Bruce Fox's "The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars", distributed by DLRC ( David Lawrence Rare Coins). It was published in 1993. It really needs updating, but its a very worthwhile reference none-the-less.

Walter Breen wrote Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins and this is what we are writing about. This is long out of print and might cost you $85-$115 if you can find it. It covers far more than just WLHs and has some useful information.

There is a Treasure hunting Walking Liberty Halves by Flynn as well. This should show most of the known varieties from when it was written. My current Coin World has this in the Amos Press flier inside.

The Fox book (Complete Guide. . .) is long out of print and in high demand.

You see it on eBay sometimes and the numismatic booksellers have it from time to time (check abebooks.com or the dealers directly).
