Dumb question

Say you find a coin that you want, the coin is graded by NGC, it is the the same year, mint, DCAM/Ultra Cam, grade, but it is not PCGS. If I wanted to submit it to PCGS for a PCGS slab, would it stay the same grade, etc... ???

It could come back higher/lower/the same grade or in a body bag...

Submit for crossover at same grade. No guaranty it will though. image

I would guess that 70-80% would cross, just a guess though

The only coin I ever had crossover was from PCI(1974 DDO Kennedy MS63). NGC graded coins that I have submitted for re-grades to PCGS always have gone down. The most recent is a 1912 S Half Eagle $5 Indian that was graded AU-53,
I paid for Presidential Review and Mr Hall confirmed my own belief.....not even AU. EF45... Hope that answers your question. Don't buy sight unseen, slabs are no guarantee of actual grade. Though I do believe PCGS gets them closer than any other TPG.

The only dumb question is the one that never got asked image
  • I have sent 4 coins to PCGS that were in NGC slabs. I left the coins in the NGC slabs and all came back the same grade. PCGS is not supposed to compromise the grade of an already graded coin. So if, in PCGS's opinion the coin will not grade at least the same or better, they will not crack it out.

  • I would say that the chances of a crossover are less than 50%. That is why:

    1. PCGS coins command higher prices in the marketplace
    2. More people want to cross from other TPG's to PCGS

If you are confident in your grading skills and believe tha the coin will cross , then you will have better luck cracking it out and crossing it raw. If not, then leave it in the slab it is in, it already has the grade you want.

I think crossovers have a lot to do with the coin series and the individual coin. I have only done Lincolns with great success. Some even coming back with full red designations that NGC listed as R&B. But key Lincolns that are hard to come by will not cross as redaliy. Just ask anybody who has tried to get the 61-63 Lincolns MS 66 in a NGC holder to cross.

  • I remember reading the crossover rate was low, around %30. My personal experience is about that rate also. People don't try every coin, only ones they think will cross.
  • I'm 5 for 6 with one upgrading from PR63 to PR63CAM. What do I do with the old NGC tabs? Do I send them in for pop report reduction? If so what address?

Thank you to all for your comments and feedback. "RMoss" I think this is the answer I wanted to hear. But the others left me enough to think about. Thanks again people.

  • PCGS seems to be even more strict on certain coins like cents, gold, and modern MS/PR 70's (something to think about) . I'm 2 for 2 on cents and 1 for 2 on gold. Also mine were in the NGC slabs when submitted.
  • Assuming I send the NGC coin in for crossover, some say if the coin will not grade the same or better they won't crack it out ? If not, are you still charged with a submission ?? I don't know since I have never dealt with them yet.
