How accurately does JJ Teaparty grade raw coins?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am working on my type set and have bought several coins from JJ Teaparty, and I am very please with those that I have acquired from them. They seem to have a great niche for attractive, circulated raw type coins for under $500. Not being expert or even competent in most of the classic series, I question some of their grading (and obviously pass on those coins), though other coins "feel" like they are graded appropriately. Does anyone have longstanding experience dealing with JJ Teaparty? And if so, how do you find their grading?

Edit: And has anyone noticed that they seems to be getting more into certified coins?

The raw better date US gold coins that I bought from them were properly graded. JJ Teaparty was one of the very few coin companies that I would buy mail order coins from in the pre-TPGS era.

Their grading is as good as anyone else's.

The key for any coin is to only purchase it if YOU like it. If you don't then return it. All professionals allow returns in a timely manner.

that's one thing I wish they would have at shows......a couple of large cases full of decent raw stuff. I still need a seated dollar w/motto and some gold for my son's 7070.

I would never hesitate to deal with them. I just an email from Gail a few minutes ago about the weather and new purchases.

    RYK,
I've only recently purchased my first coin from them. They graded this one AU50+. Seems pretty accurate and I'm happy with the coinimage I also have this concern when buying "Raw" coins. Not just from J.J. Teaparty, but all sellers of "Raw" coins.

IMO, Teaparty's grading is a often a bit optimistic. Combined with their high retail price for the claimed grade, I find myself passing on many coins I would otherwise consiuder buying if the price were "right."

I live and work very close to Boston, so I've never purchased any coins by mail. Locally, I've only heard good things about their grading.
I think you get what you pay for there, which is good service, quality inventory and knowledge, but some of the prices seem to be on the higher end of fair. That's just my opinion.

Dealing with them in person has been a good experience. Then again, all of my purchases there have been under $100. I don't get there very often due to my schedule and my budget, but in the 3 years I've frequented the store, I've only questioned a few grades. With the coins I questioned, the difference in grades only amount to small spreads in pricing.

  • their grading is accurate, their pricing is very high though.

  • I've only bought one coin from them and 1873-S Seated Dime. It was represented as a VF 25. When I got it I would say it's at best a Fine 12 and it had scratches that they never mentioned. I sold it on Ebay as a Fine 12 with scratches net VG. It wasn't good enough to keep.

Many people here say positive things about them, and I think they are pleasent people. They would have taken it as a return I'm sure, but I just didn't feel like it. Buying raw coins from anyone can be dangerous and I accepted that when I bought it.

    Kurt,
No disrespect intended, but that was a silly thing to do. Many dealers count on the fact that people don't return coins because of the hassle factor. You should have returned it.

Barry, I agree to a degree, with Kurt. After all, if he sent the coin back and got a refund, someone else would end up with a coin that is touted as VF25, when in fact, it is only F12.

Kurt did exactly the right thing......... pass it on with full disclosure, Scratches, F12, and Raw.

Sometimes it is better to just get the thing out of the dealer's hands than to allow it to be sold at a grade well above what the TRUTH is, a second time. I mean, mistakes are something that are made once and learned from. Given the chance to tout it as vf25 again would be a travesty of justice !
Just think if I sold my counterfeits back to the guys who sold them to me. We would have another victim out there, with a perpetrator claiming Ignorance.

With that said, JJ Teaparty has and will continue to have an excellent reputation for being close with their opinions on grades of Raw Coins. I have only heard good reports on them and they are well represented at shows and they advertise in Numismatic News. Crooks don't come out into the light image True business minded people do.

LOL RYK.......I know you aren't implying that JJ Teaparty is one of them, though.

No, I am not implying that JJT is one of them. I like them.

Write down the names of the sellers who have whole page and two page ads in CW , and then search the forum archives for the names of these sellers. It might change your opinion of those who advertise in CW.

I see you added a little statement that they are getting more into certified coins. That is all I have bought from them. As usual the pricing was scary but after usually watching a item stay on their web site forever enough courage was built up to give them a call. In each instance they came very close to selling the items for exactly what I wanted to pay.

Now that a Raw Set is being put together I suppose its not only price but grade standard that must be watched. We will see how it goes with them again. Probably enough courage will come around in about a month on a couple of coins I have watched for quite some time.

Happy with Certified Junk, Raw has yet to be tried.

I bought several raw 2 1/2 gold indians a few yrs ago when I completed that set. Thay were very helpful and the grades were right on I thought.

Are you saying that prices are negotiable? That I should stop being a stooge and make an offer, rather than pay full freight?

I've been buying from JJ Teaparty since 1994 on a regular basis. They have supplied me with the vast majority of my Barber quarters and halves. Most were purchased raw and they were 90% on target with their grading. A few AU 58's went into PCGS AU 53 & 55 holders. Knowing that they are a bit high priced has prompted me to inquire about a discount. For over eight years they were my primary source, until I got a PC, and then an explosion of available coins were laid before me.

They are fair and honest and trust them without hesitation. When I like the coin, but feel its a bit overgraded, I don't argue the grade with them, I just argue the price. The vast majority of the time however, I agree with their assesment of grade.

I have returned approximately 20% of the coins they have sent me on approval and never once was there any discussion of my being too picky.

I remember looking through their Barber halves once for a nice raw XF for a type set. Grades seemed rather optimistic on all the coins I viewed, although all I viewed was Barber halves.

I've had good luck with these guys, on both the buy and sell side. They provide good service on want lists.

So it's the collector that is supposed to suck up the loss for an overgraded coin that has a return privilege? I don't think so.
If it doesn't go back, then the Coin Posse™ should buy it!
