Coolest numismatic word?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
The scholarly study of coins and the long history of both the subject and the hobby itself has given us a rich, umm, lexicon. What's your favorite coin collecting term or word? Some of my favs:

Janvier
Scyphate
Galvano
Piefort
Nomisma
Trime

Scyphate is a real close second to my all time favorite: electrum

Got a favorite of your own?

Beat this! A Byzantine electrum histamenon nomisma (scyphate), 1071-1078 AD:

This is a great idea for a thread. I am going to go with disme. Its the old spelling that I find interesting. Could never figure out why there is an 's' in it.

I'll see your histamenon nomisma and raise you one from a few years earlier, with an Eliasberg pedigree.

I always thought "histamenon nomisma" sounded like an uncomfortable medical condition.

I like the sound of "argentum", personally.

Verdigris sounds sophisticated but I don't think anyone wants it.

What, and look like an idiot?

No... wait a sec... I already look like an idiot when I'm wearing that hat, according to at least one source. image

But nope, no pesky plastic in my way. I did have a holey coin in an ANACS net-grade slab once- for giggles, I put a hole through the plastic and hung it on the Holey Coin Vest.

But it looked too goofy, so I cracked it out and rehung it on there raw.

    Geez. I have no idea.

Most of the coins are smaller (I still don't have any US gold bigger than a $2.50 on there).

How about "schissel" (not sure about spelling).

It refers to the leftover metal after striking a batch of coins.

There are some great ones on here (cud, verdigris - sounds so much nicer than schmutz, - disme, etc.) to which I would have to add the following:

    exergue
    lunule

    and a 'twofer'...

    two pale gules

Kurt Vonnegut said his favorite word was "schizophrenia," because for him it conjured an image of "someone sneezing in a blizzard of soap flakes." That's onamatopoeia, a word that by its sound alone conjurs up spectacular and/or unrelated images, or is fun to pronounce.
I believe this is why when you see a description of $5 and $2.5 gold Indians, you frequently see mention of the designer--Bela Lyon Pratt. People just like to say his name.
If the word "denticle" doesn't bring to mind someone using a toothpick, I don't know what does.

Schjoth is an interesting one. How about "Fisher's Ding?" Schjoth compiled a catalogue of Chinese coinage. Fisher translated Ding Fubao's catalgue of Chinese coins, hence "Fisher's Ding."

I don't like to say Bela Lyon Pratt. Reminds me of a pompous little guy with an oily comb-over, a Dali moustache and a bad bow tie.

Now Augustus St. Gaudens... there's an impressive name. Except I still don't know how to pronounce it.

    I like:

planchet - (coin blank prior to striking)
splasher - (a die strike into a sheet of soft metal, often lead)
uniface - (as in "uniface die trial" - a one sided strike)
exonumia - (coin-related things other than coins, e.g. medals)
novodel - basically a backdated fantasy restrike, like the 1804 dollar
engrailed - 1 : indented with small concave curves, as "an engrailed heraldic bordure"
2 : made of or bordered by a circle of raised dots, as "an engrailed coin" - think of some 1793 cents ...
