I know SEGS coins tend to be over graded, but can you at least assume they are authentic?

I'd be careful with any such coin, where the grading service does not guarantee authenticity.

I will not buy a key date coin (typically these are the non-gold coins that are counterfeited) in a SEGS holder. For key dates, I prefer to stick to the three major TPGs

The only coin I ever bought in a SEGS holder I have chosen to keep in the holder (I usually crack them out), as an amusing reminder. It is labelled:

"1803 Large 8 Half Dime EF-40"

It is, in fact:

1803 Small 8 (R6!) Porous, net VF-30

The only thing I assume about a SEGS graded slab is that it will be REALLY difficult to crack it open

I think Larry Briggs is a good enough Numismatist to be able to tell a counterfeit from a geniune coin.

And overgrading? I just cracked a couple of coins out of SEGS holders and submitted them to PCGS-a 1934 doubled die obverse quarter-SEGS MS64-got a 66 from PCGS and a 1937-D 3 legged Buffalo-SEGS MS61-came back PCGS 62. I've found SEGS to be pretty tough-with my stuff at least. I used to defend the service here in this forum but have since pretty much given up because of the financial realities involved when it comes time to sell regardless of the accuracy of the grade in a SEGS slab.

as mark says be careful as to the authenticy , although learn to cherrypick your series that you collect ,as there are coins that will cross at the same grade from segs.

I'm 0 for 2 when it comes to crossing SEGS to PCGS lately.......... And I was allowing a 5 point drop from VF25 to VF20 on one, and another 5 point drop from VF20 to F15 on the other........ I submitted them in SEGS slabs......... Maybe PCGS doesn't like cracking SEGS plastic either !!!!!!!

Sent in an 1885 CC $20 SEGS XF 40 holder that I picked up in San Francisco. Held my breath and sent it to PCGS as "Cross at any grade". Came back this week as VF35 !! Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then!

Larry Briggs is an experienced numismatist and will probably be 99.9% correct, just as most professionals would be. FYI, no one is perfect. Even the TPG's.

recently i sent a nice segs 66 1930p buffalo in with a 37 ngc 67 buffalo and a38d/d ngc 67 for crossover, on this submission i really felt the only coin that wouldt cross at the same grade was the 38d/d. the only one that crossed at the same grade was the 30p segs holder.

Purchased an 1880-s Morgan from a "friend" that was in a SEGS MS66DMPL holder. Being new to Morgans, thought it was a beautiful
coin and had great fields. After showing my find to other dealers at the North Georgia Coin show, each and everyone pointed out that
it was a one sided coin. The reverse would not make DMPL. Most thought it would not make PL. I know a lot

more about DMPL Morgans
than I used to. Done with SEGS graded coins. Sorry Larry!

I agree. However, why is it that SEGS is not a respected TPG?
From what I've heard, it's because grades have been sold to his friends. So, hypothetically, if grades ares sold, why should slabbing a counterfeit be any different. Bottom line, SEGS has no grading/authenticity guarantee, so why should it be trusted at all?

Look at the goings-on in Florida. There's a dealer who won the PCGS grading challenge, yet sells overgraded crap. There's a grading service (or two) in FL that slabs overgraded crap. I'm sure the principal(s) know(s) how to grade, but choses to conduct business otherwise.

Yes. Larry Briggs is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable numismatists alive and breathing. He is truly an expert at authenticating coins. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of coins and currency.

I agree with Jade's statement about Mr. Briggs. However, can buyers of SEGS product be assured that Mr. Briggs personally reviews every coin that gets slabbed? Also, consider the following from the SEGS web site:

Neither SEGS nor any of its employees nor any of its consultants assume liability, express or implied, for grades, designations, or authentication assigned to a coin other than the customer's right to have the coin re-examined by SEGS within a six month period.. After six months have passed, SEGS assumes no liability.

SEGS' guarantee appears to be limited to grade assigned, not authenticity.
