What is textile toning?

I was trying to buy what I thought was a great 1932D Quarter, raw but graded ms63 by the seller.
One of the members here said it had textile toning and I didn't know what that meant or if it detracted
or added to the value of the coin.
Any info or ideas?
thanks

It's when the coin has toning that shows the pattern of the textile it was laying against.

  • I could be wrong but I think it occurs from resting against the inside of a canvas mint bag. That's the most common, anyway. I suppose any fabric could cause it.

My example is no where near as cool as poorguy's, but I think it is neat nonetheless....... I personally like textile patterns, and think they are generally worth a premium......

Just be careful what some folks describe as "Textile." There are many that call fingerprints textile just to sell a coin.
Or to justify the uglinessimage Only buy real "Textile."

  • steve; tone on a coin is great as long as its not distracting... [ugly] tone makes a coin worth less! pretty tone is good; if this seller has graded this 32d 25c as ms63; a ms 63 32d quarter is worth $3000. ONLY if its graded by pcgs/ngc.... An au 32d 25c is worth$450.... If the seller wants one-two or three thousand for it; tell him you must have it graded first... if its nice and he would take around $500; then buy it raw; The best advice is NEVER spend big money on a raw key date coin unless its in a pcgs/ngc holder... Let us know if you purchase the coin... show us pics...image

  • Nice photos!

aknow: you will notice that all the photos posted to this thread are Morgan Dollars. Many Morgans were stored loose in bags and left undisturbed in vaults for dozens of years. I don't think Washington Quarters were normally stored that way. It would be unusual to see toning on a Washie like that on the Morgans posted here. Take a good look at see if it looks like the fingerprint that stman warned about.
