Ike dollar help post

Hello everybody, i'm on my first few posts so please...
take me lightly. I wish i would have known about the wealth of
knowledge on these boards 4 years ago when beginning to sell on ebay.
Especially the little crackout/bodybag aspects. How many former bodybagged
coins have i purchased. image

Your all a treasure to the hobby.
I'm a collector and have been for 15 years.
doesn't mean i know what i'm doing. i do my buying from various
sources, selling on epay. I have been trying to put together a nice ike set and
i picked this one up on epay last night, so this is the sellers picture.
71 and 72 p ikes are hard to find in a descent grade. question, is this one worth
sending in? Thanks for any insight... I'm in 25 bucks on it..

Hey cullenbryant, welcome to the boards. You are right, nice clean IKE's from that era are hard to find. That pic looks like a nice coin with just a few ticks, but I am always suspicious about pics taken at such an extreme angle-it can hide so much. Welcome again from a fellow gar smoker. Is that a R&J ?
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Very hard to judge from this image...

PCGs is tough on the big baldies...

a 1971 is typically a beat to death, bagmarked, rim hit, coin. Making even a ms65 GEM a semi tough find.

This coin gets scarce in Ultra GEM.....

The Image you show seems promising.........

    But its a tough call....

I would love to see a image of it after you take receipt of the coin...

    thanks jrocco.

This was allegedly given to the seller by the G.O.P for a donation he gave.
he says he kept it in his desk droor ever since. He was clearly not a dealer.
In fact it is still in the gop holder. It looks like it has nice fields, but i am not
    any good at grading these.

For a '71 it's probably decent but the strike around the periphery is weak and it looks
like it's got a ring of planchet scratches. Unless the luster is booming and the rest of the
coin is smooth with no rub then it's unlikely to be worth the grading fee. You can't tell
much for sure from a picture especially at this angle.

Since IKE's have wide ope fields, they are notorious for bag marks, ticks and hits.

Some tips I can think of for grading them...

Examine the fields closely, looking for hits, dings.... Your sure to find some but if they are small and non-distracting you can still obtain a GEM grade.

Next problem area would be IKE's big cheek, just inviting a distraction of some sort. A clean cheek goes a long way towards a GEM grade...

In the clad issues, strong nice luster is a key for GEM grades, as alot of these toned a drabbish tannish color which sometimes hurts them.

Strong luster usually equates with high eye appeal which can get that bump in grade upto GEM....

Another issue, particularly on the Silver Mint State Blue pack IKE's is the dreaded Milk Spots, courtesy of the US mint.
From what I have seen, the 71 IKE seems to be the worst culprit for this issue, where as the 72 seems to be the easier find in Ultra GEM MS67 and higher......

I just had this 74 s Silver Ike grade, I was hoping for a MS68 on it, PCGs gave it a MS67...
This coin is extremely clean and relatively hit free, has a solid strike and great luster. You will notice some stuff goin on in the cheek area
which is probably why PCGs stuck this in a seven holder, however, this is a blown up detailed image, the coin in hand, these marks are barely noticable...But alas, a mark or two away from a ms68....

many thanks for the info. i can see the weakness of the strike,
but i haven't seen a good deep strike on a 71. If you have one
    throw a pic up sometime.

lucy, i had heard you had special affection for the bald guys.image

very nice coin that 74s, and even at that i can see the ticks on the cheek.
I also hear what your saying about the drab toning on the 71 +72
Can't wait to hold this one up close. I may reimage it and post it after
i receive it, that is unless it's a total embarrassment.

Welcome to the boards, cullenbryant. Don't know much about Ikes. But, hey now...don't go hitting on Lucybop. She belongs to US! She's about as gem as you can get.image

In my opinion, this coin has more history being in the GOP holder and I would not crack it out to send to a grading service (unless of course, it grades MS66). Did the auction provide a picture of the entire holder? I would love to see it.

Welcome to the Boards and to Ikeland.
Some of those GOP 71-P Ikes are nice enough to send in. Yours looks like
it has a good chance. 'Would have to see a more straight-on shot to be sure.
Post a new picture when you get it.

    Happy Hunting!
