Can we find out what's in the Mint's vaults?

PhillyJoePhillyJoe Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭✭
The vaults must have some pretty neat stuff stored away. Most of it probably falls in the "out of sight, out of mind" category. There must be an accounting of it somewhere and if it doesn't pose a national security risk, can't this info be obtained through the FOIA or something similar?

FOIA should cover non classified info for vault contents. The only problem being finding who to submit the request to...

Probably not without making REAL good friends with the Secret Service and Treasury Department. image

But what makes you assume they know what's in there? My guess is they have only the vaguest general idea, and without a microscopic inventory taking perhaps years would they have anything approaching an accurate inventory.
    When in doubt, don't.

How about in the vaults at the Federal Reserve?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I remember some C-SPAN coverage of the dollar coin and they said they had stacks of Susan B. Anthonys covered in rat waste that were sent to NYC. So we know they rats in the vaults.

I'll betcha a box of doughnuts that there's Peace dollars stored way in the back.

(I read a 1964 memo that before they consider making new '64 Peace dollars they should consider releasing the bags of 19xx Peace dollars.)

It was a disjointed series; ran for a few years, then stopped, then started again, then stopped the next year.

Marty might be right: it's not what's in the Mint's vaults but the 12 Federal reserve banks' vaults.
