CoinGuy: Did you report this counterfeit US Philippine 1906-S peso offered on eBay to the eBay powe
Title of this thread changed to reflect that the sale on eBay was allowed to proceed. Mark had said he was going to report the counterfeit to eBay.

The 1906-S peso is THE key coin in the US-Philippine series. Were it real, it would be worth several thousand dollars, even as an abusively cleaned coin.
1. After 1906, the size of the US Philippine Pesos was reduced, so when the 1906-S is counterfeited (altered date), it has to be made from the 1903, 04, or 05 dates to have a chance of fooling.
2. All 1903, 1904, and through October of 1905, ALL US Philippine Pesos were made with a curved upper serif on 1. The serif end in a broad plateau over the descender of the one.
3. In November of 1905, the master die was changed. The most visible difference between the old and new die was the upper serif on the 1. The new serif was straight, with a little flat top over the right hand side of the descender. That's why there's a type 1 and a type 2 1905-S pesos, with the type 2 much more scarce.
4. The new die with the straighten serif on the 1 continued in use for the 1906-S pesos. So ALL legitimate 1906-S pesos have the straight serif. Any 1906-S with a curved upped serif on the one is bogus. You don't need to look any further.
5. The peso shown has the curved upper serif on the 1, so it's bogus. No if's, and's, or but's. It's a clear fake. No US-Philippine dealer needs to look a second further.
6. I'm in Manila right now, getting ready to fly home to Bangkok. But you're in the states. Phone Jon Rosenthal are RCNH or Bill Elwell at Bishop Coins (Bishop, California), two of the best US dealers in the US Philippine coins. Ask them to take a look. Indeed, if I remember correctly, Jon wrote a little booklet on how to tell the real from the bogus 06-S pesos. It will take either Jon or Bill no more than a second to tell you that coin is bogus.
7. Before I leave, a US Philippine dealer from here in Manila will visit. I'll ask him to look at the coin and report on the coin to you on this thread.

I knew that there was a transition period on that straight/curved serif but had no idea when it occurred, other than sometime in 1905. Thanks for the information.
Thank you, too, Mr. Man of Coins!
You're welcome x Bob. And I've noticed the same thing about Hong Kong postings, especially those where the feed back is hidden.'
And Mr. CoinGuy1: I'll be interested to hear how eBay receives your information. My experience is that they do nothing. I hope I'm wrong this time.
And changing subjects, how did we miss the last time I was in the states? Was I supposed to contact you? Or were you supposed to contact me? Or was that just up in the air?
Thank you, too Scavenger: When you hang around the dealers here in Manila, some of their wisdom begins to brush off. It takes time, but it happens.
Warm regards,
Just Having Fun
<< <i>And changing subjects, how did we miss the last time I was in the states? Was I supposed to contact you? Or were you supposed to contact me? Or was that just up in the air? >>
JHF - I had sent a PM to you indicating when, during your visit to the states, I would be around, but, I didn't hear back from you.
I will let you know what, if anything, I hear from Ebay.
Did you report this to eBay? If you didn't, they they're off the hook.
If you did then eBay knowingly let this guy sell the counterfeit. And I wouldn't be surprised. If I remember correctly, I think they did it once before. But at least I was able to alert the board members here, that time as well as this time.
Warm regards,
Just Having Fun
I was not surprised, but still very discouraged to see, that Ebay allowed the listing to continue.
Edited to add:
During the past several months, Ebay has gotten better and faster at ending listings by scammers which involve misappropriated images. But, that involves our providing direct proof in the form of both sets of images, etc.
Sadly, in situations like the one in this thread, they probably don't have the manpower or inclination to go to the trouble to verify the "proof" I offered to them, based upon your expertise on the subject.
<< <i>f you did then eBay knowingly let this guy sell the counterfeit. >>
No they knowingly let the guy sell a coin that somebody said was counterfeit. Not the same thing. (Not that I have any doubt that the information posted here was right. But eBay doesn't have the time or expertise to evaluate the evidence.)
