1972 D Aluminum Quarter - now with pics!-

My mother manages a laundry mat, and finds alot of neat coins, quite often. Well this time she found a 1972 D washington quarter thats made out of aluminum. This is no counterfeit, unless someone has some real good set of dies. The details are exact compared to a real quarter. Has anyone found one of these or know anything about them?
Thanks in advance!
Sam
Ok, Sorry for the delay, ive been terribally sick the last few days and was not able to pick up the coin until this morning. So heres some pic's.
pic 1 obverse
pic 2 reverse
pic 3 rim
pic 4 rim
pic 5.1 Grams
I weighed a normal quarter on the same scale and theyre 5.7 this is 5.1-5.2Grams, its about dead even between the two as it kept fluttering from 5.1 to 5.2
Any ideas if she's real or not?
Thanks in advance!

<< <i>How much does it weigh? That should tell you if its a normal coin with altered surfaces rather than a mint error. >>
when you drop it it does not sound like a normal quarter, along with it being extremely light in comparison.
Ill get pics as soon as i can

Why would anyone drop a potentially expensive coin???

<< <i>What would you all say about the discovery of a set of Bicentennial coins (quarter, half dollar and dollar) minted on 18-karat gold planchets? >>
Well since there is absolutely no record of the Mint ever striking any such set, and I don't think the mint was striking any gold coins for any other country at that time so there would be no reason to have gold planchets on hand, I would be highly sceptical. So first question is, as usual, what are the weights?

<< <i>Seems like the weight would be correct for a standard quarter if it worked in the laundry mat machine. >>
Most laundry machines have extremely simple coin discriminators. Until recently
almost anything with the correct cross sectional area would work but most will
now at least reject coins that are attracted to a magnet.
I have seen a few machines with more sophisticated slug rejectors.

I realize the mint never officially struck such a set, and that's why I wonder if the coins would be confiscated if discovered. What if they are discovered, and authenticated? Wouldn't it be similar to the 1974 aluminum cent (although those were officially minted)?

If Conder101 hasn't heard anything about it, I doubt it ever happened, officially or unofficially.

After looking at the pictures again, I say the coin is counterfeit.

The reeding doesn't even line up.
I don't know the "how" but it is fake.

I just read the posts above and I guess the "how" is cast counterfeit.

Try holding it upright and flipping it over to see if the die alignment is correct.
