A complete waste of free grading certificates!!!

Man, I got my butt handed to me with me free grading certificates.....

Line Item Year MintMark Variety/Pedigree Denom. Proof Grade StrikeChar Comments

001 1942 10C MS OBV SCRATCHED (Beautiful toner)

002 1883 O S$1 MS REV SCRATCHED (Beautiful toner)

003 1884 O S$1 MS 64 (Looked like a lock 65)

004 1887 S$1 MS 62 (Looked 63/64) (Beautiful toner)

005 1890 CC TOP-100 VAM-4 TAIL BAR S$1 MS IMPROPERLY CLEANED (It's only like a F-12...looks fine in hand?)

So I am not crying that I have been ripped off or anything.....I certainly remember the scratches on the back of the 1883 O, but never guessed it would no grade. I would have never bought the 84 O if I thought it was a 64...but it's a PQ 64 at least. The 1942 was purchased raw from Barry Stupler....so I am shocked that it got a No grade....I sent in 5 that I bought from him so now I am concerned for the rest
image. .......and finally...the 1890-CC was a gift from a friend......it looks like a normal well circulated Morgan...but I will have to look at that one closely to see what I missed.

All in all a thoroughly dissapointing submission.....but I guess I have no one to blame but myself image

image Sorry to get this news. Makes me real nervous now on a submission just received at PCGS.
  • Sure wish the TPG's would change to a report card system so we understand the reason for their grading

I still think that you should get more for your money than a bodybag- I think everything should be slabbed...... or if you're really going to jack somebody up, then some type of notation as to why would be beneficial.....

I agree, especially at NGC, where they already have the NCS entity, why not have the option of sending the BB'd coins right over to NCS for authentication, detail grade, and description? It makes perfect sense to me.
  • Shane, that is a tough one

As most TPG services brag about each grader examining from 800 to 1000 coins a day (at least 100 coins an hour with no breaks) there is no wonder that some coins just get graded wrongly.

Earlier this year I sent in a RAW 1890-CC Tailbar that I purchased from a Chicago dealer and an 1887-O that I broke out of a different service's MS64 PL slab.

I got it back MS63. The 1890-CC came back graded as I had expected it.

The fact is that is the 1887-O has full mirrors to a degree higher than a few PL's that I received back from PCGS on other occasions. One of these years I'll resubmit That's about all you can do. Certainly coin grading is anything but a science and most certainly not predictable.

  • It's been claimed by some that they are tougher on Freebies.

But HRHall says no way the graders know when a submission is a freebie.

But this is an NGC submission anyway right?

  • Yep NGC.......I have never had a problem with them so that tells me.....I ain't looking at my coins close enough. See that's the problem for me and collecting toners........I don't care what the grades are I just like the color so I don't scrutinize over them with a loop before sending them.......I have got to be more careful....as I might have caught one or two of the problem coins.

I guess I will send them to ANACS so at least they will be in a holder..........I feel like banging my head against the wall......shoot...shoot....shoot... image

Sometimes it's best to look at the coin for what it is as far as problems, grade etc. without letting the color influence/distract you.
    THEN pay attention to color.
