Any good coin shops in New Orleans?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I need to go to New Orleans next week for work (I will try not to melt while there; I hear it is about 180 degrees or something like that down there). Other than the Mint (which I am going to try like crazy to visit), are there any good coin shops worth visting? Please let me know. I am staying at the New Orleans Lakeside Hotel, so anything within walking distance of that would be great (although I will have a car). Thanks!

The guy from my office that I am going with is an Aussie. Based on my experience with other Aussies from work, there will be a significant component of "fun" after we get our work done. image

I never heard of the N.O. Lakeside Hotel, but from the name I would guess it's on/near Lake Pontchartrain away from the Business District. The only coin shop I know of is in the French Quarter on Royal Street (off of Canal Street). I believe the name is Cohen's. They have coins, guns, swords and other interesting items. I've been there many times (they have great air conditioning), but I've never bought anything (their prices are high).

There's a coin shop in the old mint building. You can't miss it if you visit the mint (which you should).

I have stayed at the Doubletree Lakeside, many times. I think you are talking about the same place. It's at the head of the causeway just before you cross the lake. There are no coins shops within walking distance. Actually, there is not much within walking distance except for some small, strip type shopping malls.
Speaking of strip, there is a club about 1.5 miles south of the Doubletree on the left. I hear it is the place to be on Thursday night (never been there myself, so I can't attest to it, and I don't know, I mean I don't remember the name of it).
There is a coin shop in Metarie (I think). Big ad in the Yellow Pages. Never been there though. The place in the French Quarter has a ton of stuff, strewn about, very disorganized, and all over priced. More like a museum.
The Doubletree has a good gym and a nice rooftop pool.
Doubletree has a shuttle but it runs early and cannot pick you up in French Quarter late. Some kind of local agreement with cab services.
French Quarter is about a 20 minute cab ride and costs about $15. If you can split the fare, it's better than driving down there yourself.

You will need your car, you will be a ways from the City of New Orleans downtown. The mint is at Decatur and Esplanade Ave. The mint has a subtle appeal because it is museumified and most of the old stuff is gone but by looking at the photos and the walls and foundation and proximity to the Mississippi River, you can get a good feel for the days. I will say that it will raise your appreciation of "O" coins a whole lot more...particularly gold. The down town part in the party zone along Canal St. has a rotten garbage stench to it, probably magnified in the heat so don't go there expecting some pristine party area, it reeks. As soon as you get to downtown, start eating and don't stop till you leave...there is more good food there than a normal person can consume. Be on the look out for bare mammaries late at night, particularly if there is anyone throwing beads from the balconies on Bourbon at Bienville. The coin shop at the mint is full retail with a number of raw coins that have questionable surfaces but some interesting offerings and I seem to recall some slabs. It is a third party private shop. The Harrah's casino is cool. It is crowded and the table minimums are a little more than the regular fare in Vegas, like $15 min at roulette and I think the black jack was a $10 min at the cheap tables. I found the casino mostly populated with drunk idiots that were clueless as opposed to actual gamblers but to each his own. There are plenty of free maps and all the conveniences down town if you just look around. Go to cafe Dumond for bingnets (sp?) in the morning and get some of their coffee. The coffee is so stiff you have to break it off in chunks and suck on them. Go to the Arnauds (sp) restaurant on Burbon St., I think, for Sunday brunch...it'll cost you $20 ea. but worth more. I love N.O. and especially "O" gold (now if I can just afford some). Oh yes...have a good trip!

I would recommend visiting Southern Coins in Metairie (Dennis Daray). If no traffic, it's about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown NOLA.

That's it. It's on Old Metairie Road, unless they have moved.

I don't think there will be many coins to see at Blanchard or Stanford, as they are both mainly telemarketing firms. But as MMB was kind enough to provide their phone numbers, it certainly can't hurt to give them a call when you're down there.
