Ebay duplicate win- Suck it up or offer deal?

HeywoodHeywood Posts: 1,246 ✭✭✭
I won 2 auctions for the same coin from two different sellers, one is a board member, the other is a large mail order/ ebay seller.

Stupid me was't keeping track of what I was bidding on and won the same coin from both ( $250 and $200).

I was going to offer the large seller that if they offered the under bidder a second chance, And it was accepted ( $245) I would pay the difference + $ 10?.

Should I try it, offer more, or just take them both, and sell the one I like the least?

Make prompt payment to both sellers. Don't saddle a seller with your propblems.

Well, you're the one who screwed the pooch. My first instinct was to suck it up. But, making the large seller the offer of the diff if the "2nd chance" is accepted would work. If the "2nd chance" is rejected, suck it up and keep better track of your bidding.

    Cheers,

I was going to pay for both this morning, but I thought about this alternative ( I just bought a second chance on sat). If the response was overwelmingly:

"Give it a try" I might call and make the offer. ( I wouls also offer more, taking into account what it would cost to ship to me, list and sell and ship to someone else)

I wouldn't do it to a smaller seller, I was rationalizing that the big seller ( Whom I have bought a bunch from) would be more equipted to deal with the situation.

Maybe the question should be, "what would be a fair premium to offer the seller?"

I would apologize and offer the ebay seller $10-$15 for the inconvenience. If he balks, then just buy the thing.

P.S. Why does everyone have to come here to get approval for their actions? If you think it's right, do it. If you have an inkling of a doubt, don't do it. It's not that difficult.

I dunno... my feelings seem to differ from everyone else's.

I say there's no harm at all in asking the seller once, politely, just about anything. For all you know, the seller found another buyer offline and is kicking himself for selling it "cheaply" to you. They might be happy to have you back out. Yes, the chances are small, but as long as you make it clear that you're absolutely willing to hold up your end, then why not ask? The size/type of the seller wouldn't make any difference to me, either.

FWIW, I've done similar things a few times, although not quite this exact situation. Most recently someone was charging what I felt was too much for shipping, and after I won the auction I asked if there was a cheaper shipping option. There was, and everyone was happy. If I had to pay the listed shipping cost, I would have done that also (and I made that clear when I asked the question).

If I were offered a "second chance" by a seller because his top bidder backed out I'd view the seller with a very suspicious eye. I'd think his shill jacked me to my max bid and then stepped aside so the seller could mop up with me. Furthermore I'd never bid on anything else from that seller.

Do what you feel you need to do. Think just a little about your sellers rep before you try to ashcan it for him.

Depends on the spread of the bids. If the top three bids were 250/245/100, then yeah I'd be suspicious. If the top three were 250/245/240, I wouldn't bat an eye. Given that there were two of the same coin eBay at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual situation was closer to the second.

Besides, anyone likely to be suspicious about something like this would also likely be able to identify a shill (or lack thereof). I wouldn't be concerned.

Another option, of course, would be for *you* to offer it to the second-place bidder...

Suck it up. Keep the nicer of the two and sell the other.

The seller shouldn't have to deal with your mistake - remember that their time is valuable too.

I do not like the idea of a second chance offer for the under-bidder. In my personal experience I have learned to stay away from second chance offers.

Agreed. Just buy both and you deal with unloading one of them.

    Thanks all-

    I will buy both

I don't think it is ok for me to offer it to the under bidder through e-bay. Not sure how to do it 'legally'

BTW 2 under bidders came in after mine. Their feedback shows they both collect the same series, so I know they didn't shill me up either.

Suck it up, and pay for the coin. I recently had a royal runaround with a buyer, and you better believe I was pissed. All I want is to get paid so I can ship the coin--you bid, you win, you pay. It's that simple.

For me it's not paranoia, it's keeping things simple which tends to keep me safe.

I never accept nor respond to second chance offers, period.

Suck it up. You bid on both, you won both, you pay for both, you then Ebay one of them once you get it in hand.

You silly goose. No harm in asking, as your sig line implies. But so far you've 1) bid on and bought two identical items 2) decided to get out of a purchase contract rather than honoring it, and 3) posted it all here, looking for "overwhelming" support. Better end that string and use the option you want to avoid, paying up. image

I had not "decided to get out of a purchase contract rather than honoring it,"

The question was for opinions on whether I should offer the seller a deal, and if so, what is a fair priemium for their trouble.

I tried to give some of my rationalizations for even thinking of it:

1). Large Power seller ( may make it more or less likely to want to deal) I was thinking more since they list many hunderds of coins per week

2). Previous buisness-I have bought from their auctions, BIN, and Website, spoken to them on the phone, and spent a fair amount of money with them

3). I would pay right away if second chance was not accepted.

    4). I wouldn't even ask a seller with whom I was unfamiliar.

Suck it up and buy both. Sellers should not have to suffer for your mistakes. Then, after examining the two side by side, eBay the one you like less.

BTW, this sort of situation is where "bid grouping" features of robo-snipers excel. You would put your max bids in for both coins; the robo-sniper would try this first, and if it won, cancel the snipe for the second. If it lost, it'd go ahead and try again on the second. I haven't used this too much for coins, but for commodity items like DVDs it's real handy in making sure you're getting the best price. For a common DVD it's not unusual for me to have over 20 separate snipes programmed into a group, each taking a shot at the item until I snare a winner.

Take both coins and compare them. If there is a satisfaction guarantee return the least desireable one. If the better coin has satisfaction guarantee and the other does not, you have another decision to make. If neither has satisfaction guarantee sell the poorer one on your own.
