What's the recommended way to store cards

I am slowly building up my PSA collection, and don't want them all lying in my assorted boxes with all the holders jostling each other- what would the expert collectors recommend as the best method to store them (i have some on display)?

Thanks!

Be careful about putting them on display - you want to make sure they aren't exposed to an excessive amount of light. Personally, I have been keeping my PSA graded cards in felt lined photo boxes. Since my PSA collection is now above 700 cards, I recently opted to try the collector boxes sold by M.J. Roop. Their sale just ended where there was free delivery and the boxes were on sale. I bought a case of 5 boxes for $160 and am anxiously awaiting for them to be delivered.

It seems that the collector's who have bought the JR Roop boxes swear by them....we'll see.

    Regards,

    Greg M.

    Edited because I'm an idiot - M.J. Roop - not J.R. Roop..lol.

  • What would be considered excessive light? Is a lamp from the room excessive light? What about if the display case has PVC protected glass? Currently I have a display case in my office with limited sunlight coming in but the light from the room and a lamp are on most of the time. The diplay case has PVC glass. Are these cards in any danger?

  • Im hoping Roop will have a nice cash and carry special at the National. In fact, I just may write to them and ask them for that as postage will already be free if they bring a supply.

M.J. Roop has their free shipping special on the wooden "preservation" cases until July 15. Those cost twice as much as the "archiver" boxes, which hold the same number of graded cards (172+). I had never tried Roop, thinking them too expensive when shipping was added. Then they had the special on the archiver boxes, with free shipping to boot, so I decided to see what the fuss was about and ordered one box. My basic concern was sturdiness, so we'll see when it arrives and I load it up.

Knuckles, is that PSA's test to prove that its holders are watertight??

jr: I don't think even PSA would have the balls to 'water test' one of their holders containing that gem. image

jr dolan, I got a mj roop box for fathers day to hold my ever increasing 77 topps psa set, I do like the box a lot. I wish they made a box that would hold a whole set psa graded though. The key they sent to lock the box doesnt fit that well but the box is top notch.

Roop boxes are the best way in my opinion...their wood boxes are top notch, and even the lesser expensive preservation boxes are great too.
  • HoofHeartedHoofHearted Posts: 2,537 ✭✭
I got a case of 5 of the lesser expensive [edited to add: MJRoop] boxes when they were on sale for $185, shipping included. They've helped me to get my collections organized in a nice-looking way. They hold the top loaders, too, so you can sort the cards graded and non-graded together or separated, to help keep track of -- and enjoy -- what you have so far.

Does anyone know exactly how many PSA slabs will fit in a Roop box? Roop says "172-180", which seems like a rather large range. The reason I ask is my 1981 Topps set is 198 cards, so I think I'd be SOL trying to get them all in.

They are usually pretty accurate with how many PSA slabs will fit. Sometimes you can fit one or two more maybe, but not 20. MJ Roop has great supplies, I store my graded cards in their boxes.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • My favorite storage cases are the "Green Monster Boxes" that the Treasury Dept. / U.S. Mint
ships their Silver Eagles in. The boxes are super-sturdy resin/plastic; marginal measurements
    14 1/2 x 8 1/2 / 4 1/2. (They are built to hold 500 coins.) They hold 70-PSA cards in some of the
most secure compartments you can find; 35 in each of two compartments.

The boxes are sought after as collectibles, so they are not usually cheap. Some coin dealers
give them away to their good customers. They are almost always for sale on ebay. The
search term is "green monster." They cost $10.00 to ship anywhere in the U.S. They usually
sell for between $20.00 and $75.00, depending on how bad they are wanted by someone
    at a particular moment.

They can also be made "almost" waterproof for longterm storage. When opened, they can
be used by dealers as excellent countertop "flip-thru trays" that will hold 140-PSA slabs.
(That kind of retail display is NOT recommended for high-ticket items!!) (They are also
    good for postcard trays.)

The fancy wooden boxes are very pretty, but they are toooooo heavy to carry around.

The four-drawer "Craftsman" tool chest at Sears is also a real secure storage box,
but it weighs a ton. I have used just about every solution available over the past
many years, and find the "Green Monster" without equal.

If anyone has the wooden preservation case, how much do they weigh approximately when filled with 172-180 PSA cards? If anyone has both the wooden preservation case and archiver card box, can you briefly explain the pros and cons, if any, of each?

    Thanks for your help...

MJ Roop has got to love this thread, since they pull quotes off CU forums for their testimonials. I'll post my own review when I receive my archiver (non-wood) box. It better be pretty sturdy to hold 172 PSA slabs.

I thought of buying another couple, or even a case, just based on the positive comments here, but the free shipping ended Saturday. Oh well. Roop guys, if you would consider extending that promotion for those who bought their "test-drive" box during the special ...

Does anyone have a picture of how the PSA slabs store in one of the red or blue plastic boxes that they sell?

Besides card board boxes especially made to fit slabs by BCW, I have found this company and products:
    PSA card storage

It looks like the MJ Roop V-notch boxes, but a lot cheaper.

Does MJRoop sell his stuff on eBay? If so, what is his eBay user id? MJRoop ID has 1 feedback and isn't the guy. The MJRoop link provided above is for sales consulting. image

I don't know, but for some reason the MJ Roop boxes are for sale on the bay for way more than that website has them for. One of the chipboard boxes even sold for $79.99 when it sells for $27.19 on that other website.

I think the Roop boxes are a little expensive. For a few extra bucks you can get a Pelican case with Pick N Pluck foam and store 250 cards. Also, they are water proof and crush proof cases.

By the way, I water tested a PSA slab and it definitely does not hold. The water slowly got into the case and the card drank up all the water it could. Don't worry, the card was a 1991 Bowman Ozzie Smith that was an extra. Also, the case had a slight crack at the top and I didn't want to pay for the reholder so I used it as a sacrificial dummy.

I think you are referring to MBMiller25. He has some real nice cases that several members purchased. Not sure if he is still selling them.

I am glad I revived this thread, the pelican cases seem awesome. Its like the Rolls-Royce of basecall card cases even though they have numerous applications.

Are the dimensions within the regulations of carry on baggage on airlines?

Brandon, No another foam fabricator, but Barrier could certainly do the trick for you. Ask for Russ if you want to use them, Good Guys up at Barrier.

Yes the cases are ATA approved, You will have no trouble with airline travel and all fit in overhead compartment for carry on, unless you get on one of those regional jet's then you might have to check the bag airside.
  • Matt, I actually work for Barrier! you are right...we are a bunch of good guys up here HAHA!

For anyone interested in traveling on an airline with one of these pelican cases, here is a bit of info. The Pelican 1510 is the largest allowable airline carry on case. I traveled with one of the 1510's from Germany to Delaware with no problems and it fits perfectly in the overhead bins. Also, this case has wheels and a retractable handle which is very nice for hauling through the airport. Finally, the Pelican 1510 case will hold approx 200-250 cards. It depends on how you tear the Pick n Pluck foam. You could also get custom foam to fit them better. Hope this helps

They sell new Pelican cases on ebay.

I see there is a 1510 and a 1510NF. Couldn't one simply add the foam later to a 1510NF, or is there another difference? I am thinking the model numbers are different due to how they are sold, not that the 1510 and 1510NF have other structural features.

    << <i>1510 and a 1510NF >>

Difference between a 1510 and 1510NF is the NF stands for NO Foam. Understand that when you purchase the No foam case, your getting zero foam, no lid foam, no base pad, nothing. I would spend the little bit extra and buy the with foam version because even if you have a custom insert made for your case, you will still need to purchase lid foam and will need a base pad. There is a huge difference between a NF case and WF case in terms of cost.

    Hope that helps,
  • DeutscherGeistDeutscherGeist Posts: 2,990 ✭✭✭✭
So, I can purchase a 1510 and then purchase the foam later for it to be exactly like the 1510NF? Its just the foam that's different, not the hinges, latches or size?

I was just thinking if I can find a used 1510 for $70 and get new foam for $65, then I'm still ahead when compared to a brand new 1510NF.

Andre, Dont go cheap when talking about buying a case like this. I would not buy used, as you might be inheriting someone else problems (I.E. Case is no longer watertight, airtight, dustproof). The inside foam is the most expense part of the case in most cases, The way Pelican prices there cases, there is little difference between a case with and one without foam. At the very least buy a brand new 1510 with foam and when you want to spend the money for the special foam insert to fit slabs, go ahead and do that. PM me if you want some help, I will be glad to assist.
