anyone going to the national???????

hi guys--my computer crashed a couple weeks ago and i havent been on the boards for close to a month so i dont know if there's been any posts regarding the upcoming national convention in the windy city in three weeks (i'm sure there have been some posts but when i type in the keywords "the national" or "national convention", only posts from 2004 appear). anyhoo, i'm going to be attending the convention for two of the days and was wondering if any of my fellow collectors has any idea as to how this show will be--ie, good, bad or somewhere in between. this will be my third national and second in chicago--i attended the one in 98 and was simply overwhelmed (probably b/c it was my first one and obvioulsy the largest card show i had ever attended) and i was at atlantic city in 03 and was pretty underwhelmed--not that it was a terrible show, but it was just average in my opinion. i am anticipating this years to be much better than that one because of the venue (nothing against atlantic city in general, but i just think chicago has more panache and is a more appealing locale, and i'm sure many of u would agree). i collect primarily vintage graded cards (psa only) and didnt find too much of it (or at least for what i was willing to pay) in atlantic city--we spent more on gas and the hotel on that trip than we did on cards; any of u out there have any idea how much vintage graded will be covering the tables at this years show??? i've seen the list of dealers, and while it is quite extensive--many i'm familiar with and many i'm not--i'm just hoping to be able to walk out of there with some good deals and not just come in contact with dealers of vintage who want smr (or over smr) for their cards (ie the 707 sportscards of the world)--any vibes or ideas on what kind of show we can expect would be greatly appreciated--thanks!

Dude just stay home if you're expecting to find graded vintage cards at the National for less than SMR.

    kuntryboy,

"Dude just stay home if you're expecting to find graded vintage cards at the National for less than SMR."

Among other reasons, that might not be true if the show has lack luster attendance or it is the last day of the show.

  • Keep in mind the show is in Chicago which is typically the best city for the show. You will be able to find some vintage PSA at or below SMR but don't expect to find low pop cards at those levels. We'll be there as usual (Our 17th National) at booths 508 and 510 right next to the corporate section.

As far as the "Last day of the show" idea of deals...

Usually not from the large or full time dealers. The weekend warrior might be up for last day discounts but people who do this for a living will have another show to setup at soon and don't typically blow out inventory.

  • I am going to National this year. It should be a good show. Everyone usually complains when it is in Chicago because Sportsfest draws out everyone's stock. This year, however, Sportsfest was really lame. All the best dealers held out to attend National instead. It should be a good show.

The show will have plenty of vintage stuff. More than you or I will be able to cover over a period of 4 days. I do agree that if you are looking for bargains, you need to not waste your money on the cover charge. The dealers are paying $1000 for their table, not to mention the other items. The nice thing about going to the Nationals is being able to preview your card before you buy. If you are looking for a really nice Aaron card from 1958 you have the option of shopping not only price, but quality.

  • My booth will have about 100 new PSA graded cards never offered before. Items like: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5218200678&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT&rd=1
I have many more sharp raw cards including a nice 1961 baseball vending lot find.
Booth #683, 1st aisle right behind the corporate area facing the front door. I will also be selling plastic supplies at most competitve prices. Look for the banner hanging from the roof over us- BCW Supplies. Hit my booth early as the big time dealers buy most of my best cards the first 2 days, then jack up the prices at their booths. I would like to sell to collectors first, but money talks, as the saying goes. Happens every National. #11 for me.

There will be a lot of vintage graded cards available for less than SMR. Of course, most of those will probably be cards where SMR is just too high (like some '60s and most '70s Topps issues).
