UPDATE - 1967 SMS Half - shot at DCAM - 2nd visit and more pix.

Picked this up earlier this week at a local shop. Looks real good in hand, but is in need of a bath. Think it has a shot at DCAM. Also a Birthmark

  • Ut oh... where's Russ??? paging Russ. Can't really tell if its DCAM through the plastic. Yes, it is in need of a bath but if I were you I would not do it myself. That coin needs the attention of NCS. It does have the making of a DCAM just can't tell on the mirrors if there is enough contrast to warrant it. When Russ shows up I'm sure he can give you a better read. He is way more familiar with this coin then me.

NCS and submit. Most of the coins from that obverse die have holdered dcam. Good luck, and nice find.

He need some love before you submit, like he said, go with NCS before you submit. It looks CAM for sure, not sure about DCAM though....

    Nice Birthmark piece.

I agree that it needs to go to NCS for some cleanup - worth every cent.

Looks to me it has a good shot at dcam.

  • Thanks for the info. I agree, I would never try and clean this one up myself.

Anyone know what kinds of turn around times does NCS has?

Right now NCS is running a month and a half. Just sell it to Russ for some HUGE amount and let him worry about getting the MS67 at PCGS!!!

That one is going to be a tough job, even for NCS. You're looking at multiple layers of crud built up over an extended period of time, not just a simple haze layer. But, if anybody can do it, they can. The key is whether or not it can be done without frosting up the mirrors. This die has exceptional mirror depth, which makes them pretty delicate.

Even if it does conserve well, I'm thinking maybe not DCAM on this one. The bust has the multiple little areas of frost fade characteristic of these on later strikes. Taken individually, they wouldn't keep the coin from getting the designation, but in sum they tend to mute the contrast just enough to prevent DCAM.

Here's a similar example that is not Deep Cameo because of the bust:

Regardless of whether or not the coin grades DCAM, it's still a hell of a find and very rare in the raw. Congratulations!

PS: Want to sell it? I know a place where it could live with five brothers. image

  • Good information, and a bit of a letdown as far as what damage may have already been done. Thanks Russ.

As far as selling it, I’m not sure yet. I have been looking for one of these for a while now. At least since I read your first post and saw the pix of one.

As a side note. The dime that was in the set is almost perfect. Extremely frosty with very clean fields on the observe. I was thinking this would easily go 69dcam with a shot at 70dcam. Then I looked on the reverse. Biggest freaking scratch I have ever seen on a dime. talk about a letdown. good example for the 7070 though.

Just out of curiosity Russ, or anyone. You mention that they are a rare find in the raw. Are there any numbers or percentage of how many there maybe?

    Edited to add question.

I've never found any info on the numbers produced. I have about 20 unique examples of graded coins in my image archive that I've dug up from auction listings. But, in the thousands of sets I've looked at I've never found one. Even the raw example I posted above was in a PCGS holder before I cracked it out.

  • WOW.. that is a tough find. I guess I never realized that.

I agree with the others that these are tough to find. I have looked at thousands of sets and never found one. Remember - it is just one die and the frost will wear off quickly making the birthmark fade.

My June NCS order was turned around in about a month - door to door. I agree with Russ, if anyone can help that coin, they can.

    Chazpear,

BTW, I'm pretty sure Marty has never found one in the raw either. So, that's at least three voracious hunters who've yet to achieve what you just did.

  • I went back to the coin shop today to see if there were any of the 67 SMS sets left from the ones I picked up earlier this week. There was another 5 more sets. So, I buy all 5 remaining sets. I asked the dealer if he had anymore and he said no, these were all from some estate he picked up a couple of months ago and I bought all 10 of them. I wouldn't call this beginners luck because I have now purchased just over 40 sets. But I’ll admit after hearing what the rest of you have said and the number of sets you have found. My percentage if very high.

Anyway, Get home and this is what I find.

this one is a real bummer. I'm not sure anyone can do anything about the finger print

First thing that come to mind after I have thought about this for a bit. Why can’t I have this sort of luck with the lottery.

Very intelligent move. These types of coins come in "runs" - when you find one you often can find many.

The new one definately needs to go to NCS but I am skeptical that they can help the obverse. If anyone can do it, they can.

    Good luck and great snag!

I don't think NCS can help you with these. But it was a hopeful lot none the less. Keep looking!! The thrill of the hunt keeps one coming back for more. Chris
  • Well inquiring minds would like to know... how much did you pay for them? They are great coins and Russ was right again. They do seem to be from the end of that die's life. NCS is going to have their work cut out to save the finger print one. Be interesting to see them after they return and have been entombed. Pretty awesome they were found all in one shop and were there for you to find. Wonder how the dealer had them?
