From those images, the coins look overdipped or cleaned. Looks like images from "great southern coins" or "tuesday night coins" and their other aliases.

I like the first one. -especially the reverse.

The Barber might be OK but doesn't look quite natural. It might be lighting.

    I have returns on both...

I have bought from this guy before... Here is an example of a coin that is now in my collection.

His pics first and then mine...the coin is now in an PCGS XF45 holder.

Interesting, ahem, "difference" in lighting.....his pics certainly do show the coins "in the best light".

I will be interested to see what the 1871 ends up looking like in your posts....

    Ron,

I would have bid higher on the coin had he posted my pic on the 1818. I was worried about the coin being cleaned when I bid on it, I would have been so worried on mine.

You like the look of his better?

Nope....not "the look"...but, I think that his show it more in a "toned" light and that he is going for that.
That's what I mean "in the best light".
I think yours is more accurate.

The 71 seater with the sick yellow tone is a turnoff to me. Judging from the shiny retoned spot in the right obv field I'm guesing AU-55?
The 93 Barb would be attractive to me because of the blue periph BUTT the partial print on the base of Liberty's neck and in the field @ star R 3-4.....well you know how I feel bout prints.

Another example of PCGS net grading:

The Barber looks like a whiz job. Note how diffused the "luster" is.

dare i venture to say the seated and barber quarters are polshed mint state coins.
unc. details AU55 but, still great coins for what they are.

I'd like them better if they were in a ANACS, NGC, or PCGS slab. The surfaces look suspicious.

Hey guys...thanks for the opinions. I agree with most of what you are saying, and if I were asked the same question, I would be very concerned as well.

    So...here is my thought process...

I bought both of the coins, and they both come with a return priv, so I dont have much to lose other than postage. I am confidant enough in my grading skills to know whether or not the coin will grade and what it will grade.

I personally think that both coins are proofs which would help account for the poor photography and diffused look from an inexperienced photographer. Also, 1 in a 1000 business strike seated quarters have a strike to match that coin, plus the coin has wire rims...it is a proof for sure.

There is a 90% chance that I will be sending both coins back, but...I am willing to take the time to get to look at and buy two coins at a potentially reasonable price...

I mean, I bought the bust quarter raw and paid 600$ for it...not a bad price...and I dont think PCGS net graded it. I think it should have been net graded but I call the coin an XF45...I was expecting a VF35 due to the light scratches. I think the scratches were deemed market acceptable. Truthfully they dont bother me and I am pretty picky when it comes to my busties.

That bust quarter was a diamond in the rough -- congratulations.

Sometimes you can find these buried within the raw cleaned crap these types of sellers peddle. They think they are so smart by selling the cleaned crap to newbies, yet they are not smart enough to know the true value of some of the "good stuff" they have. I love it when sharp guys like you rip them! image

Good luck on the quarters -- post some pics if they turn out to be good proofs!

Both quarters coins appear to be cleaned and are starting to retone. I believe the 1818 is cleaned as well but has retoned over time.

    John,

the two coins you posted for opinions look unnatural IMO as well.

commenting on the 1818 Quarter, your pic's look much better and show the coin the way it actually looks. I would have felt more confident bidding on your pic's than the sellers???

The 1871 quarter appears to be a proof and possibly a decent one in the 63 to 64 range. Who knows. The right field has either contact or handling that breaks the color...hence probably at best a 63. But it appears to be a decent coin. I do not mind the yellow tint and prefer that to bright white and horribly cleaned.

The pic of the barber is so bright that it could be anything...but more than likely not anything good.
