Since we were looking at the early posts for Russ, I figured it might be interesting to see other first posts. At least I still collect some of the same coins as when I started.

I'm the new guy of the moment. I've been lurking here for a while. I'm the usual crazed coin collector found around here. I tend toward half dimes and type collecting. I also like indian cents, Buffalo nickels and early lincolns. I'm not a dealer but like to buy from them. I don't do registry and think it's mainly a ploy to get you to buy more slabs of this or that brand. (Beginning to sound like a coin nerd dating service add). Never been to a coin show but would like to someday (Live a long way from anyewhere big).

After lurking for a few weeks I just had to join your forum so hope you dont mind sharing with y'all. It is nice to see some referrals for dealers, some boo's for the questionable ones, comments on ebay follies, beautiful coin photos and tales of coin collecting exploits and the forum is collector oriented with an eye on the buks as well so this is a very good forum that really suits my interests.

I'm not a dealer but have done a little dealing. I'm just a collector that has been collecting since my paper route days during my early years. Later, as I had more where-with-all in my wallet, I collected very nice MS morgan vam's and of course the "cc's" when I could find a good one. With the bust of the 90's and loss of my little company all of my collection was sold back into the great sea to try and stay alive but to no avail...still went belly up. So, now all's well and I find that the pleasure I get from coins is still as strong as ever so "cover me, I'm going back in!"

I've started easy, working now to finish a roll set of Amer. Sil. Eagles, have a good leg up so finishing won't be too hard and they are relatively inexpensive so not much down side. Generally, they are very nicely struck and the walker design w/ eagle is very compelling. I'm very impressed with the '04 proof I just got from the mint...it's such a nice strike that the shield is purple...wow! Of course I 'm still stunned from when I went to buy the '95 W proof Geezzzzz...that one will take a little time! Next will be the $5 MS indian gold that may not be able to be completed in MS but we'll see how far I can get, then we will see what comes next. I can't go back to morgans, I'm still heart broken but over the years, I suspect any collector gets some heart break from time to time. The only problem with MS morgans is that once bitten, you live with the sting because the darn things are so beautiful, patricularly a strong strike with a good die. I love the way the reeding cuts into your fingers and the "liberty" tiara in the hair and that lady's face when she has a cameo cheek, yummm...and surely there is no other US coin with cotton bolls. But...one can only handle so much pain.

My favorite coin is the Gobrecht flying eagle with the star field, lust in it's most primal form!!! I went to Wash. D.C. with the specific intent of seeing it in the Smithsonian but that one coin was not there. I asked around and no one could tell me where it was...one guy said it was at the US mint collection so I walked there...nope, not there...I have never seen one and am still looking for a MS (just to look at mind ya') because I believe that is the most beautiful coin the US has ever minted. I wonder what it would take to get a few minutes with a loop and a towell so I could just drool around on it for a while.

P.S. I vote for the Trade Dollar to make it to the next round.

I posted this on April 5, 2001. I did earlier ones, but I could not find it.

I've been having the darndest problem finding an affordable Charlotte mint $5.00 half eagle. I don't want to spend $3000.00 on a AU-50 coin. Do any Fine-12 coins exist? Are there any other collectors who try to get at least one coin from each mint?

<< have run across a couple of polishing oddities that I would like your opinions on. Sorry if the pics are of poor quality but I am new at this. I have an Ohio-P that came out of a 100 coin bag that is missing quite a bit on the Obv and Rev.

I also have a New Hampshire that has the mint mark polished off. The coin itself is not in very good condition but it has no mint mark.

I actually joined in April 30, 2002, under erdoc, posted once to say Hi, but then forgot my password, and was never able to get back on under that ID. I then lurked for almost a year before registering again, now under ER.

" Hi Guys and Gals. As it says I`m the new kid in town. After being a voyeur for the last year and a half I took the pluge to join up. I collected when I was a kid ( about 22 years ago ) and got the " itch " again when my Nephew was born last year.

Why collect again? Partly because my sister and brother-in-law started to collect state quarters because of, well you guessed it, my nephew. Another reason is that it seems that I have a compulsion to collect something ( use to collect Baseball cards and that`s been abandoned, also a reasonably large collection of Jimi Hendrix and Django Rienhardt albums that I`ll never part with !) . So I geuss I came full circle .

I`m not the the most knowlgible collector here I`m sure but, I`ll ask "newbie" questions from time to time and hopefully not too dim-witted posts.

My favorite coins that are in my budget (in which isn`t very big ): Morgan Dollars and Large Cent/Half Cent Braided Hair.

My favorite coins that will not be in my budget unless I win the lottery: Draped and Capped Bust $5 Gold pieces.

Hello all! Been collecting since I was ten or so (in early '80s) then stopped for awhile (college=$$) and started again after marriage and settled into a new home.

I recently purchased a morgan dollar from a coin shop in my area and wanted to know what you would have done if you were in the same situation... I'll give the answer to what I did on 12/23.
I wanted to buy an 1888-O and was presented with 2 choices: both $1 were prooflike, raw and uncirculated. One was a solid MS 64, lesser PL with a fairly weak strike on the eagle's breast and liberty's hair while the second coin had a very strong strike for an O mint, more obvious PL qualities but an obvious MS 63. What would you have done?
