From newbie to expert in 3 years - Amazing! Thanks for bringing this one up again.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
What a fantastic example of the educational power of these boards.
He came here 3 years ago as a total newbie, gained a lot of knowledge, and now the student has become the teacher.
Note however that the power of the boards can be used for evil, as well as good. Case in point: nobody, and I mean nobody steered poor newbie Russ away from the Kennedy halves!
Russ has increased that coin's visibility by at least 100%, and managed to add the ONLY example in 68 Dcam to the pops thats been added since he arrived. Cool deal.
Developing theory is what we are meant to do as academic researchers and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
It certainly illustrates what one can achieve if you zero in on a particular series or two, hone your skills to be razor sharp, and make sure you're being very active!
The forum at its best. He worked his ass off. Russ went from asking lots of questions to making lots of interesting observations to making lots of great coins (and money along the way). Now all the Kennedy collectors ask him.
I remember those early posts, he often took a lot of grief and I admit to rolling my eyes more than once about his fascination with this series. Now I consider him the model of how a new collector should approach the hobby and the series that inspires them. More than any other forum member he earned his respect here and it was fun watching that.
This clearly shows that you can be new to a series but spend enough time researching, learning experimenting and asking the right questions, and become a clear expert in your field. Thing that impresses me the most is the short amount of time that it took for Russ to get thier. I was amazed to see only 3 yrs

<< <i>I think it's cool to see Russ asking questions like that >>
I asked a zillion questions when I first joined. Probably annoyed the hell out of everybody.
Now I annoy the hell out of everybody in other ways.

This thread should be required reading for all newbies from now on...
I thought Russ was a wisened sage since forever. Makes me feel better he was no better or worse than most of us here.

What's wrong with that? Greed is the foundation of capitalism. And capitalism, of course, is the foundation of freedom itself.
At least you're not a peace-loving pothead hippie
