Registry Abuse?

Check this out:

DRRC Seated Dollar set

He just registered in most of the dollar categories. At best it's advertising in one's Registry set, at worst it's listing inventory for sale in the Registry!

I have no problem with listing the coins if he owns them. But the spamming part of the description is out of line. Reminds me of what one board dealer did a few years ago in his set listing. PCGS "fixed" that problem fairly quickly.

I think the description goes over the line and ought to be removed. If you want to sell material, use the BST forum.

Well they cannot use the Registry Forum to sell anymore so they must use something that does not disappear, a BST listing, within 10 minutes. This reminds me of the David Lawrence stuff that hit the NGC Registry. Hmmm....

There shouldn't be a big problem with that.

The guy buys and sells tough seated dollars.

I put in my registry set descriptions that I'll buy tougher dates/coins. I do not advertise for sale there nor a web site (maybe that's pushing it), but if someone gets to read his description of his set, they have a clear interest in this series.

    Just my opinion!

Here is what the RULES say about it:

    Buying and Selling Policy

The PCGS Set Registry is to be used to list collections of coins. By the sheer nature of the Registry, items listed are invariably bought and sold. However, using terminology such as "for sale or trade," "auction0205," or listing an item with a price is not permitted. The Set Registry is self-policing. Should you see an infraction of this policy, please report it to setregistry@collectors.com.

Maybe I'm seeing it a little diferent. By registering his coins he is able to keep someone from stealing the cert. numbers. And I see no link or prices in the set that is linked above.

I must be missing something too, I don't see anything wrong with his listing of the set image

Doesn't look good to me. Just a hunch, but I don't think these coins were registered in the true spirit of the registry if they are for sale in the person's inventory.

Thankfully we don’t have to divine the ‘true spirit of the registry’ with the above mentioned rules. This set appears to be within the rules. Has the set been edited since this thread was started?

Looks ok to me. AS TWQG said, has this been changed since TDN started this thread?

Well, I guess the true spirit of the registry has been divined.

Interesting--I used to not like this practice--Don R. has been listing under DMPLdollars Morgans for some time. After more reflection------ I find it useful to see if there is a market retail value on some of these by clicking the website, in cases there's a similar coin up for auction. Of course if and when my collection is bumped to 6th by his 5th place, I'll totally change my opinion!! image

Doesn't bother me any. If a dealer wants to build a museum for any series and compete in the registry while he has them, good luck.
It's certainly difficult to get all the coins together why not selling any, and climb the heights of the registry. And if a dealer should accumulate all the coins needed at one time for a top registry set in a highly competitive area, why not get the credit for it?

What DRRC offers is a patchwork of various grades and coins, and is far from a "set" at this point...and likely never will be. No need to worry imo.

Doesn't bother me either. The registration of this set gives saavy collectors valuable information on availability, pricing, etc. To not allow such listings does a disservice to collectors.

I think almost every registry set listing is its own advertisement in anticipation of the day when it goes off to one of the auction houses. Then the Registry is invoked again for advertising purposes when it is described as "THE #__ SET on the PCGS REGISTRY".

So what's all the fuss about???

I own the coins.....inventory or collection....what's the difference???

I don't see any harm in listing my coins on the PCGS registry.

Have I offended anyone or hurts someone's feelings???

Please let me know.....I'm not in this business to create enemies. This is about enjoing a hobby.

    Have a great day.

Check with BJ - she'll tell you exactly what you did wrong. Your first clue might be that she edited out your 'advertisement' in the set description linked on the first page.

IMO, the Registry is for bonafide sets of coins - not for dealers to enter their ever fluctuating inventory as a way of advertising their wares. How cheesy! image

    donr99:

I think the difference between an "inventory" and a "collection" is maybe straightforward:

An inventory consists of items that you plan to sell in the foreseeable future, often as rapidly as possible. It is not possible to complete an inventory because there is no plan or goal defining what would make an inventory complete.

A collection consists of items that you plan to hold for some period of time, not try to sell. The amount of time the person plans to hold the coins might differ from person to person, but there is no attempt to sell the items as rapidly as possible. A collection also has some thought lying behind it about the ultimate goal, so it is possible to think of completing a collection or moving a collection closer to completion.

That said, I concur with TDN's comment about cheesy and I also concur with RC's welcome. I hope you stick around these boards.

    Mark,

Thanks for your comment.....I have to agree with you to a point, but the definition of collecting is "Collecting is a hobby consisting of the acquisition of items of a particular category and organizing or displaying them. These collections are often highly organized and carefully cataloged." A quote from Websters. An inventory is similar with the intent to sell....but all collections are eventually marketed to sell. An inventory is a collection for the purpose of selling....you still have to collect them....if you know what I mean.

As far as PCGS's opinion about the subject....."Although we do encourage dealers to list their collections in the Set Registry, and in fact, many do, we do not allow advertising of any kind." A quote from BJ regarding my listing the sets a week ago. I certainly understand their position.

I don't see this as being cheesey....though I do like cheese !!!!!! Cheese burgers, cheese pizza, and cheese on my salads :&gtimage

I'm not looking to cause any harm. I'm proud of the coins I have in my inventory or collection....either way. I see no harm in listing them, though I'm aware that some will disagree.

Still seems like a lot of fuss about nothing.

    Best regards,

    Don

I really don't see any problem with listing them in the Registry. The set is far from complete, and when and if items sell it will drop in the rankings. It's not like he can easily replace what was sold at will! Seated Dollars in Mint State, except for a few dates, are very difficult to come by, and as long as Don doesn't have a price next to the coin in the Registry I really can't see any harm. Who is it hurting? Doesn't seem cheesy to me.

Many of my Registry customers, none of whom are dealers, are often approached with an offer to buy a particular date or two. If the price was enough of an inducement, some have sold some of their dates.

Don owns them, he can list them in the Registry and sell 'em if he wishes. They are HIS dollars, after all!

I think that links to personal or professional web sites and such should stay out of the actual listings. The fact that a coin is there and the fact that a person makes there email address visable. Says your availabe to discuss the coin, just like the fact that if there is a open slot means your open to offers. If you don't want to be open you can close your set. BTW I think maybe some of the closed sets might be in fact be protected inventory. Remember a registered cert. number is being tracked.

The issue was not that the coins were simply listed as a collection. Instead, the description of the set was that it was simply a list of coins for sale. I think it's a big difference.
