5.6 grams/ 86.5 grains is certainly within tolerance for clad quarters.
5.7 grams/ 87.5 grains is the normal weight.

I can't see anything from the scan that leads me to any particular cause why
you can't see any copper core, except if the coin has been lightly plated, as
a novelty item, or out of boredom by someone at a machine shop, or someplace
    that plates items.

Yes, the coin could be plated, and still weigh that amount....also, it's possible
that your scale is off by one tenth of a gram........

It could be something else too, but it can't be determined based only on the scans....

    Just my opinion......

What would be a more definative test?

It's possible for the clad metal from the bottom side of the coin metal strip to be carried onto the edge of a blank should the edge of the blanking die or the edge of the base plate hole get a little dull.

That being said, it's more than likely that the edge has been plated. I've seen a number of such alterations over the years.

If you want a definitive test, take a scalpel and shave off the metal from one side of one of the reeds while observing the procedure under a microscope. Invasive yes, but it's simple, cheap, and yields unambiguous results.

  • Could you share the thickness of the coin? Could you also describe the texture of the surface? Thanks
