What caused effect on this 2005 Bison ....'Hungry Buffalo' ???

Comments

  • Excessive die wear. The dies should have been retired earlier. They're just plain worn out.

Thought maybe it was over polishing. Does seem to have general loss of sharp details.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I have a whole roll of Bisons with missing manhood. I am thinking about calling them "Bobbet Bisons" and selling them on ebay...Serious post

More and more very minor common anomalies caused by very commonly seen die wear and normal minting fatigue sell on the auction block to unsuspecting uneducated collectors for very far more than they'll ever get for the coins in return because someone was creative enough to attach a cutsie name to them...oh, how exciting.

  • Here is another rather extreme example of excessive die wear. image
This coin is actually slabbed by ANACS at MS63.

That's predominantly because die wear in itself is not a factor in determining the grade of a coin. From the portion I can see of that dollar it appears to be MS63ish.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. I submitted the coin to ANACS myself, and really have no qualms about the grade. Unfortunately, who in their right mind would want to buy this coin...

    unless...

    I hype it...

While I haven't looked at these coins... excessive die polishing, WOULD NOT effect the details on the high points... polishing goes straight across the fields (Why you only see the raised lines in the fields and not on the devices) and excessive polishing will only weaken shallow details, because it takes off to much metal from the fields, making the overall design shallower, but would not eliminate details of the high points...
