Sniped!

Man, I hate getting sniped! Got sniped 3 times tonight by the same son-of-a-you-know-what on Mercs I was trying to get from the one seller. I was convinced I was going to get them for a steal too up until the last 10 seconds. I almost thought shill bidding, but I assume he's got a sniping program. That should be illegal.

Tell me your most upsetting snipe story....

I hate when I go to snipe a coin, and then find that my bid went in at 2 seconds, rather than one second, or even zero seconds. That really irks me...but then I'm more careful with the next one.
  • I don't see why you should be upset by a snipe bid. It is clear that the sniper wanted to pay more than you did. From the seller's point of view, I'm sure he is glad to sell it to the sniper for more money than you were willing to pay for a "steal".

  • I won on a couple of snipes tonight. One was a cheapie from Russ. I've got two small kids, so have to use E-snipe because I can hardly ever hang out on Ebay.

It's disappointing not getting the coin you want, snipe or no snipe.

    hedgehog847,

Fight fire with fire. Start sniping instead of bidding early and tipping your hand.

  • This is really sucks.
  • I guess I should quit whining huh?

I think I'm going to buy less on ebay and go to a local shop. Sometimes bids get rediculous on ebay anyway, and I could probably save $$ at a shop and actually see what I'm buying.

Thanks for the input and "reality check."

A manual snipe is usually closer to the wire than an automated one.

Don't assume. Unless I'm going to be out of town, I always log on minutes before the auction ends and snipe the old fasioned way. Recently I sniped both THIS and THIS. After years of eBaying, I've learned you either snipe or be sniped.

C'mon! What's with these wimpy 4 second snipes? I consistently get 1 second snipes & I'm still aiming for the coveted 0 second snipe! image

The best snipe is when someone makes a 5, 4, or 3 second snipe then gets the "Congratulations, you're the current high bidder" message. Then when they refresh the screen
they find out they're looooooooooosers because of a 1 second snipe!

i think you'd be better off with a 3 or 4 sec snipe.

    why you may ask?

    1) almost no one can get it in in 3 secs
    2) YOU get the first bid on the item, preventing those nasty higher bid exists messages
    3) no one will attempt to shill with 3 secs left

No FBL on that first one??

  • You either snipe or be sniped!

That is My favorite statement of this thread.

I used to think this, but I changed my thinking after a particular unsuccessful snipe.

I don't remember the exact details (or maybe I don't want to remember) but I will give you the idea. I was bidding on an SLQ, placed my snipe and my bid was denied because it was too low. When I looked at the bidding details I realized what had happened. The winning bidder put in his bid about 2 seconds before mine. His high bid was ie. $283.50 (I know that this was his high bid because the previous high bidder's high bid was $280.25 (previous to that was $250.) and the next increment should have been $5.) My own bid was $282.57. Had I bid 2 seconds before the winning bidder I would have won for lower price because his bid would have been denied as not being high enough. image

Therefore, I now snipe with more time left but hopefully not enough time to allow someone to "double" snipe.

    Joe.

If you don't want to get sniped, bid higher.

I've gotten two 0 second snipes, but with a dial up connection, it was more by luck than by choice. I ususally put in my bid with 5 seconds left and keep my fingers crossed.

If all works well, I win. If not, it wasn't ment to be. And if I get out sniped, then I guess I didn't want the item bad enough.

    0 seconds left

Doesn't count. You put in an earlier bid! image

I think sniping is fine as long as you put in the ol blind bid.

Uncle Joe---I believe this statement is in error. I used to believe this was correct and was also out bid--AFTER my snipe--by fidy cent more(on a hundred dollar item). My snipe was with 3 secs left and mr fidy cent came in at 2 secs left. I took my case to ebay--they never responded as I initially felt their software went haywire. So Iz up & went and took my case to the bidding discussion board and they told me where to put my whining. In no uncertain terms I might add.image

Uncle Joe---I believe this statement is in error

It depends where the previous high bid was at regardless of the bidders max bid.

ie. If the current high bid is $5. and my max is $10., if you bid $10.02 you will be the high bidder because your bid was higher than the next increment from $5. and higher than the high bidder's max bid. Then any bidder after you must bid at least $10.02 + the increment.

If however the high bid is $5. and the max is $7. and you bid $10.02 (the new high would be $7.25 (I think)) and now if I bid $10.15 after you I will win because my bid was at least the bid + increment and higher than the high bidder.

Joe. (I tried to be as concise as possible. Hope the concept got across) image

Agreed! If there's no risk of loosing the item as was the case here, such a snipe really doesn't matter.

I bid high, early. That way potential snipers are discouraged from bothering with it.

After you've been sniped, ask yourself if you would have paid more than what the sniper entered. If the answer is yes, you should have put in that amount to begin with. Right?

Yes, but can't a guy try to get a bargain? haha

  • Well like everyone has always said, you have 2 choices;
    1. Enter an early bid that is your absolutly highest bid and keep everyone is away
    2. Snipe it

Sniping is where you'll get most of your bargains I believe and you have found out. If it is something you really, really want I would go option 1 and if I lose it, well it just wasn't meant to be mine.
