Is this ebay proof gold coin auction legit?

Is the coin really proof?

Is the coin pictured really holdered?

Would a scan of the coin in the holder make you feel better...or could that just as easily be manipulated?

Why the private auction?

PS: It's keyword spamming, (this seller does it constantly), but the auction is legit.

    NGC evidently says it is

The scan shows a NGC holder - if you're not sure about if the coin is actually IN the holder, ask the seller

    Probably, but you're right.

You gotta wonder about the private auction deal . . .

i about drooled when i saw this coin.

if i had the money to win it, i would definitely request several
    more pictures.

I would talk to the seller via ebay and get a feel for him, etc...

    beautiful coin.

Will the seller let this go no reserve?

I agree with the keyword spamming. In fact, there's a lot of garbage in the title--so much that I probably would not bother to open the link.

Haven't seen him weenie out yet. He has two eBay handles, this one is his company handle. His name is Lloyd and there are quite a few coins in registry sets that came from him.

Anyone care to put a number on it?

    I say less than 2K.

But there's no way I would bid on it.

An impaired proof (Proof-55) for such a coin is of little interest to me. I would buy an impaired proof of a Stella, Gobrecht dollar, and a 56 flyer (two of these three may have really circulated). I would not buy an impaired proof of any other regular proof issue. That said, I am the current high bidder. image

I looked up the coin in PCGS's price guide. I was way off.
2000 seems to be the more correct guess by a poster above.

sellers other eBay handle is skytyr2

he is a member of these boards

I think he said rareland coins are jointly owned

he feels private auctions allow bidders to bid higher and without spam from wannabe scammers

That is a dubious strategy. I will usually avoid the private auction for fear that the auction is a scam (as in this case).

I feel the same way. The three examples you mentioned are all rare in ANY condition, but if I were ever in a position to buy proof classic gold, I would want one in all its splendor. An impaired proof wouldn't do it for me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

If it is Larry (dabigkahuna) then I can say I have done business with him and he is outstanding in terms of fairly representing and fairly pricing his material. Sent it when he said he would. I would buy sight unseen from him any day.
