Morgan collectors- do you ever feel a little embarrassed that you collect Morgans?

Sometimes I hear people knock morgans, about how you go to a show and there are thousands and thousands of generic morgans lying around in every dealer's case- and how it's the stereotypical coin collector's coin- does any of that ever make you feel a little sheepish, like perhaps you should also collect something more esoteric? And despite the number of people that deride morgans as generic bullion coins, there is something about them that always captivates me- the size, design, high grade examples, tones, prooflike fields, etc, and I realize that I will always have them in my collection.... How about the rest of the morgan devotees? image

People knock them because they are so popular. I have over 400 in my collection, and post pictures all the time.

    Proud yes, embarrassed never!
    When in doubt, don't.

For the reasons you note, when it comes to Morgans it's wise from an investment perspective to focus on those that are not in such abundant supply and not easily duplicated: attractively toned gems, PL's and DMPL's, and rarer dates. As well from a collecting perspective, I find it personally more satisfying to focus my Morgan purchases only on dollars that have these characteristics. So, while I own almost 200 Morgans, none are white, common dates with regular surfaces.

Do I feel embarrassed about collecting them? In a word no. To me its better than collecting oddball stuff that you can't hardly give away whe the time comes to sell or upgrade. The thing about Morgans is that most every issue is available in most grades and price ranges to suit most collectors and their popularity makes them easier to sell when its time to move on or upgrade.

Morgans, Peace dollars, Saints, $20.00 Libs, Lincolns, Mercs, Buffs, Franklins, and most everything else is pretty much dirt common. Very few "Rare Coins" are actually rare.

    Dragon:

Please let me know about the first "dirt common" 1895-S Morgan in PCGS Good-04 that you run across. I've been looking for four years and I have only seen one... which got away from me because I wouldn't pay VF money for it!
    When in doubt, don't.

  • Give me a Rainbow Toned Morgan and i'm a happy man. I would be happier if I had Rainbow Toned Bust Dollars, but alas fortune has not allowed me to amass great riches, so Morgans will have to do.image

Embarrassed ?....No way. Actually, I feel pretty good and upbeat about the series. I'm also glad there's plenty of them to go around for future generations.

  • I love Morgans (and Peace Dollars)!! I have even started to (gasp!) looks for VAMS (but only Top 100 Morgan and Top 50 Peace -- I would get lost tracking the others).

And, it seems to me that VAM cherrypicking is becoming more and more popular. If Morgan collectors are laughed at, then the VAMers must be the laughingstock of the coin industry!!

why would anybody be embarrassed by what they collect? Unless they are collecting cans of smashed a$$holes.

I collect coins, stamps, comics, pez dispensors, 1950's items, Betty Boop stuff, radios, records, movies, and classic cars...

    Whats to be embarrased about?

Yes there are many Morgans, and great, the better to find those gems with...

Actually sometimes, but if I get a common it's MS63/4 and $75 or less, with something special like toning or PL surfaces that are very original and special in some way.

So yes, that's why I'm working on finishing the 20th Century small denomination South American Gold series that Eliasberg started but never finished. That's fun, except Jaunita and Carlos keep outbidding me on Ebay!!!! image

No other coin trips my trigger like a MS Morgan. Now add some nice color, a VAM, and I'm in coin collecting heaven. image

Until recently, the only Morgan's I had were a few common date circulated ones in a Whitman Album. This makes only the second or third slab that I have now, and the mailwoman brought it today. Here's what she brought, another of what I like to call my mbadm3 pics -
