1855 Seated Liberty Half with Double 8 - new pictures

I've posted this in a couple of other places but haven't gotten any specific info on the error. Is it rare or something common? The 8 is doubled. The coin in holed... right through Liberty's head.

Looks like it's a repunched date - common for 1800's coins. As for the hole, well - now you have a holey coin image

Nice repunching. Maybe one of the seated Gurus will see it sometime.

  • There were 7 obverse dies used in Philly in 1855....... 4 of them are considered "normal date" obverses, and there are 3 known obverse dies where the "1855" is recut over "854".........

Check your coin at the "flag" of the 5, and also at the crossbar of the 4 for other signs of repunching

Nice repunched date. Probably not particularly rare, but still very cool...
  • Thanks for the replies. I don't see anything special about the 55. Don't think it's a 1855/4, but there is a die gouge in the second 5. The first 5 may be slightly doubled. Also, from the obverse, the rim on the left is raised much higher than the right.

One more thing... where is the mint mark on this series? I assumed mine had no mark and was from Philadelphia. Just wondering if the mint mark is where the hole is on the reverse.

This is the 1855/4. A better variety with a good premium.

  • Its a 1855/854........ The crossbar of the 4 shows clearly in the second 5........ Not particularly rare, but not especially common...... yours is a middle die state specimen........... Unfortunately, the hole pretty much negates any collector value........ image

  • Thanks folks. Shows how much I know. I thought it was a die gouge/scratch in the second 5, and I was focusing on the doubled 8. Thanks again!
