What does it mean when a Paypal payment is "Unclaimed"?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I sent a Paypal payment an item won on Ebay about a week ago. When I checked my Paypal account, it says the payment to the recipient is "unclaimed". What does this mean? Thanks.

It probly means that you tried to pay with a credit card and the person has a personal account which cannot take CC payments and therefore has yet to decide whether or not to accept or deny your payment. If he decides to accept it then he will upgrade to a premier account and maybe he don't wanna do dat. And I don't blame him.

  • If you paid with a credit card to somebody who doesn't take credit cards because they don't have a "Premier" paypal account, it will show up as unclaimed. This "forces" the receiver to upgrade their account, subsequently allowing paypal to steal a little of their money on every transaction, or refund the payment if they don't upgrade. There may be other reasons for unclaimed, this is the only one I'm sure of.
  • I have also seen that when the payment is sent from an unsecured address?

Here are more facts: I have around $300 in my Paypal account, so I just transferred $25 to the seller. Any other thoughts?

It could also mean the guy has not accepted payment yet, so it's still there yet unclaimed

You'll see unclaimed for the following reasons:

You used an unconfirmed address and the seller has his preferences set to prompt whether or not to accept it

You made an error in the email address of the seller

The seller has a personal account and you used a credit card

From the comments so far, I suspect it may be reason number 2. Carefully check and make sure you sent it to the right email. If you did, you can cancel the payment and send it to the right address.

Thanks for all of the thoughts. When I looked at the listing further, I noticed that the seller had another email address from the one that I originally sent the money to. Maybe he forgot to update it in the system or something. Anyway, I cancelled the other payment, and I sent the payment to the new address that I found. I sure hope he does not neg me. I wrote him an email explaining what happened, so I hope he understands what went on.

Log into your PayPal account. In the summary, if your second payment is unclaimed, it will show that. If it is, I think it would be a good idea to call your seller to straighten it out.

Another reason that a payment can be shown as unclaimed is that the person you have sent money to does not have a PayPal account.
