How about a key to a safe deposit box where you can put your cash.

Just buying keys without building a set is just an investment (gamble) strategy. In the case of most sets there are plenty of keys to satisfy the set builder if the "key buyers" weren't holding them.

If you feel the need though, Id look at the sets that are most likely to be hot in the next 10-20 years and keep in mind the most likely set grade. Buying an 09-SVDB in 66RD has little appreciation potential unless there will be a lot of set collectors of Lincolns in 66RD. Stick with the circ grades

I think your thinking is right on! Plus these are classic coins (based on historical performance) will be in DEMAND. They may go through various up and down, and static cycles. But keep this in mind, they're not making them anymore.

2005 Platinum half ounce proof--- It's not guarenteed to be the key yet, but the mintages keep dropping. I think it'll end up with a mintage around 4,200.

If you're going to get the '98 SMS matte Kennedy, might as well add on the SMS 97 Jefferson, the 1996 w dime, and Type II proof 1981 SBA as well. You can get all three for around $700 total, all four are keys.

16-d dime, 1877 indian or 1885 nickel are all good choices.
It's been my experience that the 1885 in problem-free fine or vf is extremely scarce. It seems that when does turn up, there's always something wrong with it. IMO, If you can find a nice one, grab it.
The 1886 and 1912-s nickels are also good dates, but I'll take an 1885 any day over those.

The 81 SBA type two has already fallen from about $300 to around $220.. a tough drop, but not as bad as the common PR70DCAM SBAs. Ouch... though now may not be a bad time to get the set.
