Better to buy old third party graded than newer?

I asked this question on another thread but I don't think I'll
get an answer there.

So would it be better to buy third party graded coins that were
graded in their begining or that have recently been slabbed?

buy the coin not the holder
  • Buy the coin, all third party services are inconsistent with their grading.....

It's rare for an older holder to have a coin that hasn't been really looked at for crackout, although they slip through once in awhile if they're not worth much more upgraded. It's just as likely the coin has a problem if a dealer leaves it in an old holder.

Like others said, assume nothing and evaluate each coin on its own merits........ image

  • So, morgannut, you would say that an older slabbed coin probably is
    not near being high end?

And that the better ones(high end for their grade) get brocken out and resubmitted?

In that case newer ones would have an advantage.

Some copper collectors like to buy red coins in old holders on the theory that they are stable and if they were going to "turn" they would have already done so.

In the old day, PCGS rarely hand out grade above MS66. If you find a coin with good eye apealing in the 66 Older holder the chance are very good that will get upgrade. The problems is it not easy to find one. What is left in the older holder is unattractive coin.
