NGC grades Battle Creek Collection of toned Morgans

NGC has just announced that they have graded the Battle Creek Collection of toned Morgans.

There are over 1400 coins in the collection and NGC says that every one of them has received
the star designation.

I find it hard to believe that all of the coins would get a star. Wonder how it would have turned out
if the graders had not known the coins were from an important collection for NGC.

  • Wow, that is a lot of stars! I'd like to see that collection.

I agree, it would be impossible for every coin to get the star if they had not come to a decision to give every coin the star without judgement. So much for grading an individual coin on it's merits. So much for no special treatment for individual submittors/submissions. image

I wonder how the Battle Creek collection would compare to GSAGUY's gems?

Thats kind of an unfair statement to make with nothing more than an opinion to back it up.

Well, if I cracked out all the toned Morgans I have in bank box #2 and sent them to NGC, I bet every one of those would get a star.

As has already been stated, let's wait to see the coins first before passing judgment.

Maybe they all deserve a star?

If the rest of the collection looks like that, I don't think there was a mistake in handing out the stars.

Of the group of 1400 only around 250 are very nice toners.....the rest are white or show very small bands of color....very small. Must have been a bulk deal that the whole group get stars.....

kind of a shame to give them all stars.

I believe, and am assuming, which can be a huge mistake on my part, but picture having 2000 coins, and NGC reviews them and states that they believe X number will garner a *. SO, you submit the coins that will star, and they do, while the "others" will sit, off the market, for however long whoever owns them decides.

Call it a raw coin designation review, with only the coins * worthy, slabbing at this time.

NOW, you have ALL the coins from this "collection" which are graded as * coins.

OR, someone with the sharpest eye and insight as to how NGC assigns the star designation reviewed the coins before they went to NGC, and they batted 1.000 in their designation opinions........yeah right. image

Maybe after looking at thousands of dipped out white pices of garbage, NGC has decided ANY nice original Morgan has extra "eye appeal". BTW, I would be very interested in knowing how many of these are full 95-100% rainbow toned and grade MS-67, even with the new expanded idea of what superb gem means these days. I bet it's not many. In fact, I'd be surprised if there were that many top notch rainbow MS-66 coins, certainly not 250. It will be interesting when we know.
