Ebay is getting absolutely ridiculous ...

... I looked at bidding on over one dozen Morgans "ending soon" on ebay today and all but one had obvious shill bidders running up the price. Ethics and character are running quite low in our country as of late ... and not just with the immigrants.

  • I think the tactics (shill bidding is certainly one) of many sellers on ebay today are ruining the business for coin collectors buying on ebay. It is so much trouble that I rarely bid on anything.

What are you talking about? The conservative Christian right has never been more been powerful in this country.

Seriously - you should find another forum (or hobby for all I care) rather than say ANYTHING like this here.
  • "I looked at bidding on over one dozen Morgans "ending soon" on ebay today and all but one had obvious shill bidders running up the price"

    And your proof?

    Any links?
  • Lol ... conservative christian right does not equal ethics and/or character ... IMHO they have been the antithesis of such qualities in the last 20 years. Secondly, if you were able to run a scam-o-meter on ebay, I am quite sure that more than 50% of the coin scams would be of asian origin. Finally, free speech and the right to not always be politically correct is the most wonderful quality that this country has to offer.

No ... I am talking about bidders with 0 to 2 feedbacks bidding on 20 of the seller's auctions over the last six months bidding at least 5 times per auction. Blatantly obvious shill bidding especially when I check the seller's other auctions that have closed in the last six months and ALL of them have the same pattern.

Sounds like you're frustrated. Tell how you really feel.
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
Well, the simple solution is to know what the coins you are interested are worth, and to bid the most you are willing to pay as late in the auction as possible to avoid having your bid bumped up.
  • Catch22Catch22 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭
You would be surprised at how many people have asked me to shill bid on one of their auctions. Not anyone on the PCGS forum, but people that I know who sell on ebay. I don't rat them out, but I do make character assessments rather quickly. You learn a lot about a man when you play golf with him.

It happens. It sucks. No defending it here.

But the bottom line is, you know what you're willing to pay for a coin, an amount at or below which you're relatively happy to place the high bid.

Just bid that amount (accounting for shipping/insurance), as late as possible. Yes, it sucks if a shill takes a $40 high bid up to $80 on a coin you'd pay as much as $100 for, but if you still snipe at the end and take it for $81, you still got it for less than you were willing to pay.

    it's sort of a glass half-full/half-empty thing.

20 years? Antithesis? A very serious allegation that implies you are knowledgeable on the matter. Please briefly list 10 major issues that qualify as these Antitheses...10 issues so boldly defined as "Antihesis" should be easy for you to substantiate over the past 20 years...can't do it? I didn't think so - people that use loose over-generalizations as you do invariably cannot back them up with concrete, substantive evidence.

Well ... my thread has been taken completely off topic ... however, in deference to your request:

hmmm ... a few issues common associated with the christian right that, to me, indicate a lack of ethics and/or character.

    - lets kill abortion doctors to save the unborn

    - sex outside of marriage is a sin ... unless of course you are one of the many many fundamentalist figureheads who have been caught humping their secretaries

    - Jesus is the only way to heaven and everyone else is damned to hell ... for those of you who do not believe this, try to keep an open mind

    - send us your money and you will be saved ... gotta love Benny Hin

Come on now, I am sure that you kinow the rest ... I am not arguing the merits of these issues, simply that the stereotypical fundamentalist position makes one question the proponents' ethics and character.

As for your accusation that I was being anti-semitic ... nice attempt to saddle me with another politically incorrect moniker, but if you review the thread, you will find that you are the only one who brought up the Jewish faith. Why don't we just stick to the things that I actually did say ... I am sure that my actual statements will provide you enough fodder for an emotional response? For that matter, I propose that we stick to my orginal topic of Ebay coin scammers and shill bidders ... DON'T YOU JUST HATE THEM???

Your isolated examples of a very few whackos proves nothing about those of Christian faith. It would be like me stating that since you're an idiot who bids stupid money on obvious scam auctions, all eBay bidders must also be idiots.

Good idea. Now post the links of auctions you feel have been shilled. The only way to stop these scammers is to out them publically -- name 'em and shame 'em.

Why do you guys keep trying to put words in my mouth. uofa1285 calls my statement anti-semitic when Jews were never mentioned. As for your implication, I did not indict "those of christian faith" as you indicate but rather the "conservative christian right" that was initially referred to by Artist ... there is a HUGE difference. I have enough controversial opinions to share as it is... you need not force new ones upon me.

In addition, yes, you are correct. I have made some uninformed purchases in my new found hobby that, in retrospect, seem less than wise. I appreciate the collective pool of knowledge that this board has to offer and enjoy utilizing this resource as my own kowledge continues to grow. However, I have never responded to anyone on this board in a disrescpectful manner, such as by referring to them as an idiot, regardless of whether I disagree with their point of view, and your remark will not change my resolve nor my particpation on this forum.

I agree whole-heartedly. I started this as a thread about currently running ebay coin scams and it was pulled WAY off topic. It doesn't even belong in the Open Forum, it belongs on on a website run by Rush Limbaugh or Michael Moore.

Ah, but YOU were the one who essentially opined in the same breath that all immigrants have low ethics and character. I expect such odious opinions from many folks here, but not someone who's actually been to Asia.

You're entitled to your opinions, and as far as I'm concerned you can voice them wherever you want, but surely you don't really believe that the course of the thread has been "pulled way off topic."

Ethics and character are running quite low in our country as of late ... and not just with the immigrants.

There are many immigrant and first generation coin collectors who would rightfully take offense to that remark. Sure, you have every right to say whatever you want, but we also have every right to call you on it. Overall, I thought it was in poor taste and was disappointed that it came from you.

Why is it shill bidding on EBAY and just protecting your investment on Teletrade? I hear people talking about how they had to buy back there own coins on Teletrade cause demand was weak. Well its the same thing as shill bidding. All the shills are doing is protecting an investment, so people don't lose there buts. If EBAY wanted to do away with shills, then they would offer reserve auctions at no additional fee.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?
  • OK ... so the moderators are editing my posts now ... discussion over.
  • In conclusion, I did not say "ALL immigrants". Do I think that ALL modern immigrants display a lack of ethics and character? NO ... I have lived in many other countries and have many friends who are fresh off of the boat. Do I think that the current influx of immigrants into the United States is doing more harm than good by increasing crime and decreasing our quality of life ... YES. Do I think that we should adopt an immigration system more like Canada's that promotes the immigration of good hard working and well educated people instead of the dregs of third world societies ... YES. That is all. I did not condemn all immigrants, but I do believe that for every one good person that immigrates to the US we are getting ten criminals.

RYK ... yours is an opinion that I can appreciate and respect ... maybe you are right.

I am bored with this topic and am going to play golf ... have a nice day :-)

I do agree. There is a lot of shill bidding, and you can NARU them all you want. They will come back in a day or two.

But goes back to my old question:

Why*does*anyone*bid*coins*on*eBay?????????? Unless you're Russ and know what you're doing...

Condemning ten out of every eleven is pretty close to condemning all, but I'll grant you it's not quite there.

    Hello Fletcher.
  • I hate shill bidding, but it doesn't ruin my eBay experience. I pick a coin (or other item) I want, decide my max price, and snipe at the last second. If a shill wins the auction instead, then the seller can eat the FVF image
