Maybe I was wrong re: A new tactic for scammers re Ebay? I received a phone call rather than an emai

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
I just received a phone call from someone purporting to be with Ebay.

He supposedly wanted to confirm some of my account details, though he claimed he was not going to ask for any personal information. But, when I said I wouldn't confirm anything, he told me my account had some suspicious activity they wanted to check out and that he would suspend my account, then send an email. I told him that sounded just like other scams I had heard of and hung up.

Mark, you should have done what I do with the email scams. Given him a bunch of bogus information to waste his time.

I don't suppose *69 would work on them, though...
  • Mark.

Any idea of how they got your phone number?

It's on his website, which he links to in his signature. Assuming it's the same number, anyway.

We always get one or two telemarketers even though we are on the do not call list, we like to mess with them a bit image

Does your eBay account still work?

Yes. In fact, just this morning, I sold $2.1 million worth of merchandise I didn't have.image

I have no idea how they got my (home) number - it's different than the one which appears on my website.

Due to the very brief nature of the conversation, all I know is that they were aware of my first name, my home phone number and my username on Ebay.

I haven't heard of that routine but I'm not surprised. The scammers are really getting bold. Thanks for the info!

Well, maybe I was mistaken. I found the caller ID number, dialed it and got what sounded like a perfectly legitimate recording from Ebay, making reference to www.ebay.com, etc.

I'm confused, as the person who called claimed they were checking on my account information due to suspicious activity and I am unaware of any. In addition to that, when I said I wouldn't provide any information, he said that my account would be suspended and I could contact them afterwards. I have not received any emails from Ebay and my account has not been suspended.image
  • Perhaps eBay will post a spoof phone number like their spoof@ebay.com addy to report suspicious activity.

It would'nt be hard to make a recording to sound legit.
I'd wait and see if I got suspended from ebay.

I just bought my first coin on Ebay. I was surprised to get 7 emails requesting information and payment. At least I got the coin from the real seller! Is this normal? And can't Ebay do anything?

That's why I asked if your eBay account still works. eBay reps will sometimes call prior to NARUing an account if the activity is not slam dunk obvious.

It seems weird that there is "suspicious activity they wanted to check out". It seems they have access to anything they would want to look at without needing your confirmation first. I would still be worried it could be a scam, just because you dialed back to a "legitimate sounding" Ebay number, who knows if it really was or if they just routed their scam through that official number somehow. It seems weird that THEY would call YOU and ask YOU for personal information confimation, they definitely have no reason to ask bank account, CC#s or passwords since they could easily ask less sensitive information to verify that you are acutally you. Thanks for the heads up!

  • You can always do like I do with calls like that. I ask for their credit card number because I charge $4.99 a minute for all unsolicited phone calls. Most hang up then and the rest just ask "What?!" then hang up.

Joe, I agree with you, though I never let the guy get far enough to see what he would have asked for in the way of verification/information.image Now I wish I'd stayed on the phone longer.
  • Can you call ebay Mark..? Can you cross reference the # on your caller ID in Telephone Search or cross directory?
    Probably a new phish

    Mark,

Try running the number through reverse look up on Anywho:

    Link

If it is a listed number, it will show the name it is listed under.
