Amazing...all I tend to find with my detector is either junk or modern pocket change. Oldest coin I've ever found was a 1917 cent. Most valuable item - a gold chain, about 5 grams worth. I have NEVER found a silver coin with my detector.

Yeah, me too. And most people. Believe me, unless you are a relic hunter who only hunts isolated, early house sites in the boonies (a discipline I have learned somewhat), there is gonna be a lot of modern change, and TONS of trash. No matter who you are or how fancy your detector is.
Remember that this list I posted (with merely 280 noteworthy coins, many of which are monetarily worthless and/or plain ugly), is the result of about 13 years of detecting. Imagine the mountains of trash I dug in that time, the heaps of corroded modern zinc cents, the insect bites, the poison ivy, the sunburn, etc.
It's not easy. But it can certainly be thrilling, particularly when the magic happens, once in a blue moon.
